Just like Google, Bing is full of internal features like currency conversion, translation, and flight tracking, making it a really versatile tool that holds its own in the global market. Make sure to read our in-depth guide on Bing Webmaster Tools.

Once known as Ask Jeeves, the simple question-and-answer format of Ask allows for natural-language searches. This makes it very user-friendly, especially for those who are less familiar with search engines such as older computer users.

Brave also stands out for using its own web index to generate search results. Recently, it achieved full independence and no longer relies on other search engines like Google or Bing to answer queries. To the platform that handles 22 million daily queries, this means more control over results and a more transparent relationship with users.

As well as being a search engine, Startpage offers a proxy service that allows you to browse websites anonymously for improved online safety. They even have a custom URL generator that means you can browse without the need to set cookies.

A really interesting feature of this search engine is that it automatically erases your local browsing history after 15 minutes of inactivity. This means that you never have to worry about your privacy, even if someone else has access to your computer.

It provides a very similar service to Google, and you can search websites, images, videos, and news in a user-friendly layout. With additional features including mobile apps, maps, translation, cloud storage and more, Yandex offers just as much functionality but with a cleaner interface.

It uses semantic information recognition to offer intuitive answers to search queries, and data pools to generate answers quickly and efficiently. The innovative semantic map shows other relevant or popular queries, helping to give you even more information.

MetaGer is a metasearch engine that queries up to 50 external search engines, giving variety and depth to its results. It does not take clickthrough rate into account when it processes a query, so results are unfiltered and unbiased. They even offer maps and route-planning without tracking your location.

It is well-known that Google personalizes your browsing experience at the cost of sharing your personal data and by allowing Google to track you across the internet. For some, this personalization may become annoying at least.

Matteo,
Thank you for updating this thorough and thoughtful article. You prompted me to redo my browsing and search world. I now use three different browsers: Opera, Chrome, Edge (all now Chromium-based). Note: I did this so I could have different levels of security lockdown and different extensions. Each one is used for a different purpose, e.g. Work consulting, personal interest, and home finance and banking. Based on your excellent article I am now configuring each browser for different search options.

While I may end up using DuckDuckGo with Bang (!) extensions for everything, starting today I will set up each browser with a different default trying some of the metasearch and secure searches you listed in your article.

I feel that Google is trying to develop a monopoly of the search industry. They sell, AND MAKE MONEY, personal data.
I feel Google should be required to divest just as was Bell Telephone. Both are/were probably the best at what they do but use/used unfair practices.

Thanks for your sharing so I could discover many other good search engines except Google and Bing, which I think have push too much unrelated information to me. To keep my work productive, I am trying to stay focused and do not let the irreverent staff to show up in front of my eyes. Bing, for example, has pushed really distracting trends in the homepage. I find Duckduckgo is a very good alternative.

Just like web browsers everyone has a favorite search engine. In my experience Google still has the best relevant results with Bing being very close a lot of the times I have compared the two. DuckDuck Go never found a place in my search tools, I guess mostly I just found their results mixed and not always very good. I always had to dig more with DDG.

Google has died years ago for me when I needed a citation from a site I knew. It failed. DDG succeeded. But DDG is rolling to heel as well and this fact gives an opportunity to startups.
Dare!
With care :)

A lot of real information is now censored by the big tech companies, I switched over to Duck duck go and I just found out that they are now censoring information too, what is a good search engine that does not block, real scientific, medical and government information ??, thank you, cheers, Joseph

I have noticed all my searches on Duck Duck Go now want me to use an MSN app, which I have no desire to have anything to do with MSN for obvious reasons as a Linux user. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a way to block MSN? What are good private search engine alternatives?

I have submitted feedback multiple times. This does make me wonder if Microsoft paid DuckDuckGo to use MSN.com links. Another possible cause might be the fact that DuckDuckGo does use some results from Bing?

I use DDG as my main search engine. I even have the DDG browser on one phone. I don't see any MSN app references. I even turned off UBO and still see no reference. Can you provide a link you experience it?

I didn't see the little logo (and it is labeled Milwaukee Journal), which I am guessing is suppose to be their butterfly now not an eagle. So I guess now that I know I can avoid it. It is happening more and more often as their top result.
It was thread on Reddit, which I do not use, so I am not the only one noticing this happening.

Yes, as far as I know DuckDuckGo is still a privacy search engine. That does not mean that the sites you are visiting throug DDG (or any other search engine) are automatically also privacy minded though.

I never encountered a bias towards MSN news so it just might be depending on what you are searching for. I do believe that it has nothing to do with prevalence. It is just that MSN-news has become a very big player on the news market and you will encounter them from time to time (and their crappy tracker loaded sites), just like the other very big news providers (and their crappy tracker loaded sites), regardless which browser you use.

Regarding your link, it's reasonable to assume that MSN has more hits than the local news and are therefore highest ranking. They might even lobbied for an exclusive. MSN has become very big by more or less forcing their MSN crap through windows-browser-users throats.

Best to check things yourself after reading those hints on reddit:
If you want to get a good insight in what kind of crap websites try to force on you and be able to monitor and allow/block which trackers/cookies/scripts/XHR/frames are loaded, you might want to install uMatrix as plugin in your browsers. You don't need to install it from github. You can install it from the extensions "web store" of your browser.

That is exactly an opinion. But people that value privacy and don't want targeted ads do not use Google. DuckDuckgo and many others uses Google search by proxy, but without the tracking and targeted ads. Everyone has an opinion, but your opinion has nothing to do with privacy searching.

There are times Google provides good results. But Google also censors some results and prioritize others. And then there is the data harvesting of Google. I will not use Google without using the Google container extension. DDG is my primary search engine.

The mallard is one of the most recognized of all ducks and is the ancestor of several domestic breeds. Its wide range has given rise to several distinct populations. The male mallard's white neck-ring separates the green head from the chestnut-brown chest, contrasts with the gray sides, brownish back, black rump and black upper- and under-tail coverts. The speculum is violet-blue bordered by black and white, and the outer tail feathers are white. The bill is yellow to yellowish-green and the legs and feet are coral-red. The female mallard is a mottled brownish color and has a violet speculum bordered by black and white. The crown of the head is dark brown with a dark brown stripe running through the eye. The remainder of the head is lighter brown than the upper body. The bill is orange splotched with brown, and the legs and feet are orange.

American black ducks are similar to mallards in size, and resemble the female mallard in coloration, though the black duck's plumage is darker. The male and female black duck are similar in appearance, but the male's bill is yellow while the female's is a dull green. The head is slightly lighter brown than the dark brown body, and the speculum is iridescent violet-blue with predominantly black margins. In flight, the white underwings can be seen in contrast to the dark brown body.

The Mottled duck can be confused with American Black ducks and hen mallards. While both drakes and hens have very similar plumages, the hen is a slightly lighter shade of brown. The mottled duck is a lighter color than the black duck and its blue to green iridescent wing patches (compared to a purple iridescence in black ducks) are rimmed with black (sometimes with a narrow band of white) rather than a distinct white edge as on the hen mallard. The mottled duck is a southern species found all along the entire Gulf Coast and the southern Atlantic Coast. The bill of the drake is solid yellow, while the hen has more of a yellow orangish tint with black spots. The legs and feet can be a dull to bright shade of orange for both sexes.

Mexican ducks are similar to mallards in size and resemble a mottled duck or female mallard in coloration. Males and females are similar in appearance, although males generally have an olive-green bill while females have orange bills with dark spots. The head is a lighter color than the richly brown body, and the speculum is blueish green. Feet and legs are bright orange.
