If you love creating music inspired by the chiptunes of yesteryear, then you might already know who Plogue is. Plogue is the developer of chipsounds, chipcrusher, and many more. Until the release of chipsynth PortaFM, an emulation of the YM2413 FM chip cores found in the Yamaha PSS series of synthesizers, they released chiptune plugins that were only sampled-based. With chipsynth MD, you have the power of the sound chip found inside of the SEGA Mega Drive, also known as Genesis, in your DAW and as a standalone application for Windows and macOS based systems.


MD features a bit accurate OPN2 (YM2612) emulator. We combined it with a SN76489-compatible square wave core (SPSG) and a special emulation of the very crunchy sample playback found in games, and we multiplied all of this by 6 to make it polyphonic in every situation imaginable. A complimentary VGM file player allows you to audition hundreds of vintage soundtracks just like they were meant to be heard.


You also have the ability to import your own samples. Something magical happens when a sample is processed through this plugin. You can set the jitter amount, resolution depth, or have chipsynth MD automatically slice up the sample and map it to your keys. My favorite type of samples to process are kick drums and snares!


Recently, Chipsynth SFC was released, which brings a really accurate emulation of the SNES soundchip to VST or standalone format.It reminds me of C700 VST, but it seems much more stable and thought out.To see the hard work that went into it, check out this video.


Music on the SNES is packaged to SPC files, which can either be ripped using an emulator or, more much easier, downloaded from Zophars Music Domain.They can directly be played with Chipsynth SFC, or with external software like Audio Overload and SPC700 Player.While Audio Overload is easier to use, SPC700 Player displays more in depth information, but more on that later..


An SPC file contains up to 8 tracks where each can play 1 of 16 samples at a time.It is quite common for tracks to switch samples wihle playing to achieve more versatile output.Using a player, you can listen to individual tracks, which is good to analyze or transcribe a tune:


First, we need to prepare the DAW to be able to send multiple MIDI tracks to the chipsynth.We will use PolyTimbral mode which means we have only a single instance of chipsynth SFC.This is similar to how the real nintendo soundtracks were made.


Hopefully, the import went right and you are now hearing a more or less accurate soundtrack.To really push the envelope (sry), we now need to find out the correct ADSR / volume / pitch for each channel.This can be figured out by listening closely to the spc tracks, trying to match up each channel.If you've started with a simple file (like me), this process should be a matter of 1-2 minutes.


Now you know how to take apart an original SNES composition and put it back together in a modern environment.Of course this is just the starting point, from here you can learn from existing tracks, alter them or create brand new ones..For me, this is mostly a combination of nostalgia and the urge to learn about music composition + arrangement.

I'm inviting everyone to join my Discord server to contribute ideas and resources for future Community Packs. While anyone can contribute, I'm especially looking for folks who can record drum kits, unique/weird instruments, and other instruments that aren't included in the factory presets. One of the issues I faced developing presets for chipsynth SFC was not being able to license famous patches from games. I could really use some help creating presets that mimic well-known SNES soundtracks!


The SID contains 3 oscillators, each with a volume envelope, which can either be used as-is, or sent through the filter. SID music typically use one oscillator per sound. This allows for 3 notes of polyphony, but the single filter has to be shared between tracks, requiring the use of ad hoc manual allocation.


Plogue chipsynth C64 removes the need for this complex allocation process, as each voice has access to its own complete emulated core, allowing for rich layered sounds. In addition to this, classic chorus, Ambience reverb and stereo delay effects can be applied.


It is a specially created entire emulation of the SHVC-SOUND module just for chipsynth SFC, covering both the digital and analog domains. We've used our signature comprehensive digital-recording matching approach, featuring our unique custom-built rigs, painstakingly thorough testing, and stubborn refusal to settle for anything less than a perfect match.


The results speak for themselves so that you can take digital captures of whole songs from the original SNES, and the chipsynth SFC song player will match these captures perfectly, bit for a bit! So to make sure you understand, chipsynth SFC is not made out of static samples recorded from a SNES but is instead a complete recreation of how it plays YOUR samples.
