Corporate President’s Report

Carol Applegate

The board is now meeting on a semi-monthly basis as the seminar approaches.  The board is responsible for the fiscal and legal accountability of the organization.  Taxes and similar information was recently submitted such that Maryland is in full compliance with National requirements.

Treasurer’s Report

Elaine Williams

Elaine was not present to make the treasurer’s report.  No report was available.

Unofficially, as of the November Corporate Board meeting, approximately $3000 had come in already, and another approximately $4000 are believed to have come in since.

Alumnus Matt Coplai gave a round up of what happened at the recent Winter Reunion.  The reunion, which happened January 8th, was hosted by Mr. Dave Ward at his ”future home” in Phoenix, MD.  Mr. Ward is a quadriplegic of more than 30 years, and yet has been exceptionally active in the community as a volunteer, public servant, and particularly a voice for the disabled.  Alumni gathered for pizza and socialization, and then were treated to a visit with Mr. Ward and a tour of his home.

Mount St. Mary’s Partnership

Aaron Bernstein

HOBY Maryland has been able to partner with Mount St. Mary’s University for what is expected to be an enormous opportunity for an increased relationship during this year’s seminar.   Amongst the highlights of the new partnership:  Scholarships for HOBY alumni, improved housing facilities during the seminar, scholarships to pay seminar registration fees, donated gift in kind including folders, a computer, a golf cart, ice cream, and access to new university buildings.  In return, HOBY will offer MSM greater access to the program, including campus tours and admissions presentations.

Program

Greg Van Suetendael

Greg has drafted his first version of the program.  While much of the program looks very similar to last year, some specifics may have to be adjusted due to the new partnership with the University.  Notably, both Sandy Queen and Chris Bowers have been confirmed to return to this year’s program.  Suggestions were taken for this year’s essay topic(s) including diversity, bullying, stress management, and environmental issues. If individuals have leads for panelists, those leads would be appreciated.

Volunteerism Project

Kayla Tufares

Kayla has contacted the Maryland Park Service and Andy Vecchio to make arrangements for this year’s service project.  While the park service takes their extended vacation during the winter, there has not yet been a lot of progress on this year’s service project, however, it is expected that much will be developing in the next few weeks now that things are back in season.

Recruitment

Aaron Bernstein

As of the meeting, registration had reached 162.  This essentially puts Maryland on pace with last year’s attendance.  However, only 181 students registered last year while 201 was the goal; 201 is the goal again this year.

To help supplement registration, the Corporate Board has decided to participate in the National Alternate Invitation Program (AIP) for as many as 30 participants.  The AIP invites registered alternates to participate in the HOBY program.  The board hopes this will help reach goal this year which will increase financial incentives to the organization.

Registration

Danita Frisby

Danita is prepared for registration, which we have delayed in part because of details that need to be worked out with the University and registrations that are expected from the AIP.  Registration forms are expected to be distributed in mid to late February.

Faciltators & Assistant Facilitators

Alecia Frisby

Alecia has distributed facilitator applications.   Already, one junior facilitator application and four facilitator applications have been returned.  Ideally, we would like to recruit 20 individuals for each position.

Team Alumni & Operations

Brandon Pettit & Tracy Wertheimer

TA applications were to be received by January 10.  Admittedly, we did not receive as many applications as we had hoped for or anticipated, meaning there are some spots remaining.  Those who applied on time are having their applications honored and are being placed within the team first.  We will be looking to fill out the remaining positions in the next few weeks by soliciting additional applications.

Corporate Fundraising

Greg Van Suetendael

Greg is coordinating a wine dinner for early May with a friend of HOBY who has done a number of fundraisers for other organizations in the past.  The dinner is expected to bring in between $200 and $250 a head, and will hopefully raise a few thousand dollars for HOBY Maryland.

Career Lunch

Aaron Bernstein

While a new leader for the Career Lunch has not yet been found, Aaron will be coordinating our efforts on this project.  It is expected that since Don Awalt is no longer involved, getting contacts may be that much more difficult.   Additional leads would be helpful.

Gifts in Kind

As already mentioned under the partnership, MSM will be providing some GIK this year.  We are still looking for someone to coordinate GIK.

Public Relations

We are still looking for someone to help with PR.

Cooperating Organizations

Kiwanis

GFWC

Jaycees

Optimists

Carol Applegate

Christine Semon

Anne Yakaitis

Carol Applegate

Dennis Lane

Optimists have brought in $2325.  The GFWC has purchased 2 career lunch tables and raisd antother $750.  Jaycess of Towson have sponsored a student for $185.  The Elks will be donating $500 again this year.  There are also some monies that were donated for last year but carried over.
