Corporate President’s Report

The corporate board supervises the three arms of HOBY Maryland:  Seminar, CLeWs, and Alumni.  They make sure we are financially stable, meeting national requirements, and maintain our corporate status.  The Board is currently looking for a secretary. If you are willing please contract Carol.  If you are 18 and above, the seminar will need to do a background check on you.

Carol Applegate

Treasurer’s Report

Elaine was not present to report.  However, 2011 essentially broke even on fundraising with a budget near $48,000.  The new fiscal year fundraising for 2012 has begun.

Elaine Williams

Alumni Association

President

Advisor

Tracy gave the alumni report on behalf of Taylor.  HOBY MD is working on trying to help get HOBY going on college campuses.  Teressa Ferraro is working on beginning a club at University of Maryland, College Park.  For future events, the alumni association would like to be get the HOBY store there. We will need a volunteer to pick up the stuff and to take it back.  Bryan Fitzhugh is looking to have a CLeW at Towson University.  They are having trouble finding meeting space.  For the Fall Reunion, Valarie Timms is planning a Dance-a-thon.  Participants would come for 6 hours but don’t have to stay the whole time. Participants would get others to pledge per hour, or per song, and all of the money will go to stop bullying.  We need a date and a time. Valarie was thinking around Thanksgiving, at a church she is familiar with in the Baltimore area.  Reports were given regarding the two summer reunions at the Orioles game and at Sandy Point State Park, both of which went well.  Lorena Smith is looking for newsletter articles for the winter edition.

2011 Seminar Review

·       Program highlights included Chris Bowers, Sandy Queen, Travis Mason, and Kenny Capone

·       Need to work to ensure more group time

·       215 ambassadors were registered, 201 attended, with 180 schools represented

·       Because of meeting our registration goal, HOBY MD gets ~$7500 back from HOBY National from registration fees.

·       Volunteerism Project – 7 sites, over 1000 hours of service completed

·       Staffing – 24 Facilitators, 18 JFs, 27 TA (largest ever in all 3 groups)

·       High praise for staff despite losing DF due to illness

·       New university partnership, new dorms, etc. were all viewed as very successful

·       Staff / Alumni feedback

·       Some confusion when arriving on campus

·       Good: that the TA in the red jackets to help direct traffic.

·       Registration went seamless on the part of staff.

·       Generally viewed that more staff needed to help with registration in new format

·       It is that we need better placement of the TA and the staff to help with the movement of people once they get on campus to check in to rooms.

·       Car paths could be confusing

·       Meal times were very short. The lines were long, and some times did not get over there on time.

·       Kids were confused on what to do when they got into the kitchen. Need better directions.

·       Positive we had a Catholic priest.

·       Party was very good. Dance was excellent.

·       Room was very hot for the dance.

·       Good: The niceness of the people, Facilitators and the Junior facilitators

·       The career lunch sign up was backed up.

·       Parents influencing choice of career lunch.

·       Need to look at alternative ways to do career lunch sign up.  Be sure to give handouts of all the lunch guests.

·       Thoughts of doing the career lunch sign up online in advance.

Seminar statistics collected by Nick Rehak were presented.

 2012 Seminar

Mount St. Mary’s University

May 25-27, 2012

A new video introducing folks to HOBY is available at http://www.youtube.com/hobymd.  The video is produced from content put together from HOBY MD 2011.

There is a chance 2012 will be a four day seminar.  However, it will depend heavily on working with the university.

Aaron Bernstein

Mount St. Mary’s Partnership

Aaron will be meeting October 20 with Director of Conferences and Events Marianne Dempsey and Pauline Engelstatter, VP of University Affairs.

Aaron Bernstein

Program

Program will in general run similar to 2011.  Or that will at least be the base.

Greg Van Suetendael

New Curriculum

A new element as part of a national pilot is being explored.  The topic of the pilot is to an anti-bullying curriculum.  Tracy is taking the program lead on the curriculum.  To make it happen, MD will need to have some kind of therapist/social worker on site to help process potentially difficult issues.

Volunteerism Project

Service project is looking at the same park site as last year.  It would be good to get a new lead on transportation as it takes us seven buses and cost more the $2000 last year.

Tracy Wertheimer

Kayla Tufares

Recruitment  & Registration

Recruitment goal will be set at 205 as per agreement with the National office.  Aaron will be working with Jason Ott as the new lead as Director of Recruitment.   Volunteers are needed to take on schools and recruit.  It is not a requirement as in previous years.  But, will help you earn your place of Team Alumni.  A shared google docs spreadsheet will be used to coordinate recruitment.

Aaron Bernstein,

Jason Ott

Facilitators & Assistant Facilitators

Alecia is looking to put together a large team of facilitators and junior facilitators again this year.  If you know anyone college age, or in particular over 21, please ask them to come join us Memorial Day weekend.

Alecia Frisby

Team Alumni & Operations

Applications for Team Alumni will be available the first week of November.  They will be due in January.  Please try and get it done early.  They will be electronic this year.

Tracy Wertheimer

Corporate Fundraising

New leads are needed on corporate fundraising.  Hunter would like to take on a larger role with fundraising and soliciting advertisements.   Bobby offered to take the lead on trying to sequester Walmart grants.

Greg Van Suetendael

Career Lunch

Art will be leading Career Lunch.  We would like to get 36-40 participants.  It will cost $200 / table.

Art Sprinkle

Gifts in Kind

There is a large list of items that can be donated.  The list is available on our website.  Office supplies are a big one.

Public Relations

Beth is taking lead on Public Relations for the first time.  We need to discuss what we want the goal of our PR to be.  She is creating a media kit.  She would like to work with the alumni and the reunions to help generate publicity.

Carol was the only member of the Cooperating Organizations who could be present, so spoke about the role of each of the organizations.  In general, we are always looking for alumni and others to go speak with cooperating organizations to help generate publicity and fundraising for the seminar.

Ambassador Comments:

Loved it!! Have more fun/motivational speakers like Hunter and Chris

Sell "HOBY Hater Blockers" I will make designs!!  Jeb Chloer? G14

More group reflection time - Megan Fantom

Extend HOBY to Monday! - Radhika Patel

I enjoyed every single speaker and am so thankful they took time out of their lives to help influence us and give us advice… - Marquise Singleterry G1

It is difficult to find something wrong with this program - it was the best. - Olivia Adams

This has been the best experience of my life and trust and believe I'll be back for the red jacket - Anthony Meely

Less presenters and more activities, find a more engaging way to present the 3 pivotal points.

During meal times, I would suggest dismissing tables at a time rather than letting every one go at the same time to make things less crowded and confusing.

I wish I could come here with the same people everyday - Edward A. Williams

Long lines = cold foods

Shout out to Montay (enthusiasm&great JF) Tiffany (awesome Facilitaor) Kester (for helping me when I almost passed out on Sat. morning) Karen (for very nice on the way to mass) Matt (for being

enthusiastic) Taylor Z. (for being an awesome fellow cougar) Aaron for running the show!! Carol (You Rock!!) Sincerely, Robin Wivell G20

I really loved Chris and Sandy. They both made me laugh & Sandy really brought out my emotions. It was then when I realized how much HOBY means to me - Julia Cholewczynski

HOBY has helped me learn to be more open and step outside my comfort zones

The cheers were catchy and pumping. All the facilitators and TA's were constantly happy and welcoming.

My favorite part of the weekend were the panels, all of the speeches the panelists made were very well done, and everything that they had to say was fascinating - Brad Mullen

I would add more time to interact with different groups beause I really wanted to get to know everybody more personal - Alexis Alvarez

Sandy Queen is amazing. Chris Bowers is awesome… your timing of these two people isnide of the program is great. This is a well balanced conference - Dalton Leonard

Hunter's speech was the best of the weekend - Jordan Luber

Sandy Queen and Hunter have a very inspirational view on life

This has been a phenomenal, life changing experience. Thank you. - Amanda D'Ambrosio <--- She has incredibly neat handwriting

I liked the service learning project the best. It really allowed us to give back to the community and show people what HOBY is all about

I wish we would have been able to demonstrate more community service while here at HOBY. - Anthony Ellis

I love meeting some new friends, and learning that I can change the world - Lauren Jones

Maybe have more ot longer breaks in between panels to communicate with other groups and soak in information

This was a family-feel. I felt like I knew all of my colleauges were my actual brothers and sisters - Samuel Quade

Whenever people say they were inspired by something, I never really believed them or understood what they felt, but after being here at HOBY I have been touched by everyone and I really want

to get more involved with service activities :) - Lindsay Zachman

Thank you for changing me - Angela George

Overall Observations:

Received 163 Evaluation Forms. While some were not completely filled out, that's still a very impressive number

A good portion of the comments left were asking about sports activities, but clearly we cannot accommodate that request due to our insurance

Everyone absolutely LOVED Chris Bowers & Sandy Queen

It's very 50/50 on the temperature/comfort level of the dorms and auditoriums.

Many of the the ambassadors arrived between 7:45 and 8:30am

Not everyone got to participate in a Mt. St. Mary's Tour dude to their arrival time, which was expected.

Many ambassadors want the seminar extended and of course they brought up more time to meet other ambassadors as well as more time for sleep.

The ambassadors not only enjoyed the quality of the speakers, but many were receptive to the diversity. Many couldn't pick just one favorite speaker. Obviously some shined out more than others

but from a facilitator and evaluations stand point, these panels were very solid this year.

Many of the comments left talked about how life-changing this seminar has been for them :D
