HOBY Maryland Team Alumni Application 2012 - Letter from the Director of Team Alumni

“The more I thought, the more I realized that I had done absolutely nothing special. I had treated her, cared for her, and chatted with her like I had seen so many other HOBY volunteers interact with the ambassadors and one another over my previous 6 years of HOBY involvement and continue to see to this day. I realized how special the HOBY program and a HOBY volunteer really is. One email, one letter, one thank you, one comment or compliment from one of the ambassadors makes an entire year’s worth of work all worth it” — Veteran HOBY Maryland Volunteer

The HOBY Alumni Association of Maryland is now recruiting willing and able alumni to be a part of Team Alumni 2012. This past year we had an overwhelming amount of alumni interest in coming back and working on staff. With only 25 spots reserved for Team Alumni, the selection committee will be looking for alumni who have taken their HOBY experience and become a positive role model in your school, community and family. Returning to seminar as part of staff is a great honor, opportunity, and commitment.

This year’s seminar will be at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The seminar will be held over Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 25th through Sunday, May 27th 2012. Team Alumni members must report on site on Thursday, May 24th 2011 at 3PM, and remain for the entirety of the seminar.
**This year we are looking to make our seminar better than ever, we are still in the early planning process and may be extending the seminar by another day. This would mean arriving on Wednesday, May 23rd after school hours.**

If you are interested in applying to be a member of Team Alumni, please fill out the application and return it to the selection committee by Monday, January 16th 2012.

In selecting Team Alumni, we will be looking for the following things:
• Dedication: What events have you attended or participated in since your HOBY Ambassador year? Are you involved with the Alumni Association?
• Commitment: Have you completed and logged 100 hours of community service?
• Recruitment: If you are planning on returning as staff, there MUST be an ambassador representing your high school. We could also use help recruiting ambassadors from other schools, please email recru...@hobymd.org if you want to help recruit ambassadors from other schools.
• HOBY Spirit: How have you incorporated HOBY (ripple effect) into your life?

There is no set formula for creating Team Alumni; however, we at HOBY Maryland try to create a team that will benefit the seminar the most through its collective hard work, dedication and experience. As you fill out the application, you are also encouraged to attach relevant materials that you feel might help the selection committee paint a picture of your leadership attributes. Please take this application process as serious as you would a job or college application.

To be considered as a member of Team Alumni, you must:
1. Fill out the Team Alumni Application and return it by the deadline. (January 16, 2012)
2. Raise $180 or more for room and board –OR- secure $180 or more worth of Gift-In-Kind donations, -OR- a combination of the two. See below for more details about the fundraising goals.
3. Be available for the entire seminar, from arrival on Thursday (or possibly Wednesday) through clean up on Sunday.
4. Ensure that your high school will be sending an ambassador to this year’s seminar.
5. Email a photo of yourself - school photo or similar style photo to Tr...@hobymd.org
6. Register as a volunteer at HOBY online. (https://reg.hoby.org/HOBYVolunteerApplication/

Once your application has been submitted, you will email receive a PDF of forms geared toward fundraising to help you reach your $180 goal and fundraise for the seminar. The first is a list of all the items the seminar committee could use as gifts-in-kind. These items are donated for the equivalent cash value in lieu of the money that must be raised for one to attend the seminar as Team Alumni. Second, you will find our Sponsor-a-Plate form. This form may be used to help you raise money towards your fundraising goal. We recommend photocopying it and handing it out to your family and friends in helping you reach the fundraising goal of $180. Should you experience difficulty in your fundraising efforts, please talk to me for suggestions of other things you can do to satisfy the requirement.

Sincerely,
Tracy Wertheimer
Director of Team Alumni
