Hello,

I have come across your hobocopy project on the Internet.

Up to a week ago my client had a Windows 2003 server.

With this as the system centre and all main database files being located
on a shared network drive g: I was able to happily use the COPY command
E.G. COPY G:\DATA\ADATAFILE.??? C:\MYCOPY

I also had Genie Backup Manager chugging away making an incremental
backup every 5 minutes for the last month.

The Genie product literally kept an essential copy of the database files
that was only 5 minutes old.

Then the server was *upgraded* to a Small Business Server 2011.

Now I am unable to use the COPY command on any file that is in use.
(That's 24 hours a day 7 days a week!!!!!)

I am also unable to include any "in use" file in the back up using the
very same product that was ensuring I previously has a relatively real
time copy of the data.

These 2 events are causing me serious support problems.

So....

Would your product at least enable me to make copies of databases that
are in use on a shared network drive?

The data I require to periodically make full copies of are stored on
the D: drive of the server.

The exact share path mapped to G: is \\Server\Applications

The folder I require to copy file from onto my local C: drive is
\\Server\Applications\SystemData

Previously I just opened a Command Prompt.

Typed
G:<ENTER>
cd systemdata<ENTER>
C: <ENTER>
cd \mycopy<ENTER>

Then just used:

copy g:<whatever> . <ENTER>

Nice and simple for literally years!!!

Sorry to be long winded.

Essentially in the first instance can hobocopy be used in a similar
fashion to how I have been using the COPY command??

I appreciate it can't get the Genie backup manager to operate as before
but that I suppose is progress.

Many thanks in advance of any assistance.

Regards

Gary Ward.

The Volume Shadow Service (on top of which hobocopy is built) cannot
provide shadow images of network files. It's only for local volumes.
So I don't think we can help with your problem. You'd have to run the
command on the file server itself. You can do that with various tools
whose name I forget, or via RDP.
