Hobocopy makes use of the Windows Volume Shadow Service, also called
VSS. VSS is poorly documented, but basically, it allows you to take a
"snapshot" of the disk at a point in time. Other applications can
continue to write to the disk while hobocopy reads from the snapshot.
Files in the snapshot are not locked, even if the files in the live
volume are.
