Did you ever find the answer to this?

I haven't tried it. I would guess that it's 80% likely to work,
though, since it's using a fairly low-level API and it's written in
C++.

> It worked for me on an open outlook.pst on Win 8 but for some reason it won't copy a 5GB .ost hotmail file (open or closed). it does not even see the file
 it sees the open .tmp file associated with the folder but not the ost. Using win8 64bit. maybe outlook connector interfering. So I would have to say that it does work
with win 8

I seem to recall that .ost files are treated specially by the Volume
Shadow Service. As in, they are skipped. So I believe this to be
consistent with how it works on other operating systems.

It seems OST files are skipped by design in shadow copy. Here is post that explains it

  Hobocopy is a very good utility and works with Win 8

Had it working with 8.0 but 8.1 getting intermittent results  with c++ redist 9.xx. have not spent much time on it to troubleshoot but wondering if you had input. problem is with open files. When I do it with entering  in the cmd shell it worked on a single file basis but i tried it in a batch  it did not work. no error but open files never made it to the target.  got a message that popped up recycle bin corrupt. really weird. I cleared it and the recycle bin was fine. this happened a few times so I stopped using HC till i can look at it further.
