Obituary

Born Jan. 14, 1936, in Kimball, Nebraska, to Carl Edwin Reader and Winona Adams Reader. Thomas attended rural elementary schools and graduated in 1953 from Kimball County High School. In 1958, he graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a major in physics. While an undergraduate, he took part in Sputnik watches and seismology data gathering.
Thomas was employed at White Sands Missile Range from July 1958 until his retirement in April 2005. The majority of this time there he was engaged in electronic warfare vulnerability assessment. He was an active lifetime member of the Association of Old Crows, a national professional organization of individuals in electronic warfare.
As a member of the Las Cruces Junior Chamber of Commerce, Thomas was instrumental in the construction of the Christian Day Nursery. He also served as a Scout master for Troop 61. Thomas was musically involved as a longtime member of Vos Vaquerous and played in the New Horizons Band. Thomas was a member of Gideons International and a member of the Morning Star United Methodist Church.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Janice Reader, of 55 years; and children, Garth Reader (wife Lisa) of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Dirk Reader (wife Molly) of Flower Mound, Texas, and Aryn Mitchell (William II) of Plano, Texas. He is also survived by his seven granddaughters, Ashley Reader, Lindsey Reader, Megan (Reader) Sandoval, Hannah Mitchell, Ella Mitchell, Claire Reader, and Julia Reader.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at the La Paz-Graham Funeral Home Chapel at 10 a.m., 555 W Amador Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88005
