Everyone Loves A Marade!

Please consider attending not only the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Forum and the Breakfast, but also the first annual MLK Marade.  KC has its first and best shot for a substantial Marade (march-parade).  The emphasis is not only to honor this man of peace but also to be a positive tool and event for youth.

Our town has a wonderful opportunity to not only support this racial justice initiative but also to substantially advance our relationship to our city’s youth.  Next year the route is expected to be from the Plaza to Liberty Memorial (and that obvious connection to anyone who has had any access to the news in the last year).  KC needs this.  KC should have had this years ago.  KC will be better for it.

A week from today on Jan 16, consider not only attending the MLK Forum, Breakfast, and the Marade, please also consider volunteering for the Marade.  Among other volunteer opportunities, four or five more Marshals are needed at the start of the parade.

Please also consider any tax-deductible donation (to be made out to Bethel AME Church at 2329 Flora, KCMO 64108).  There are many items to be budgeted (and more items will be joyfully added for each and every dollar given for the parade and rally after the parade at Bethel): prizes for the bands and essayists, food, police from 10am-2pm for the parade and rally...

You can trust that that your funds will be well budgeted and stewarded towards maximum need fulfillment.  Yesterday’s meeting at Bethel was wonderful and inspirational.  It had multiple schools, organizations, ministers, bands, NAACP Youth… all positively collaborating forward.  This impressive collective and this momentum needs your TLC.

Now is the time.  Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Please see the attached flier for more details:
Marade (march-parade) starts at 11am from Truman and Paseo to 23rd and Vine.  Marade features dozen or so city notables and elected officials.  There will be nearly two dozen (and growing) parade entrants: the Marching Cobras, the Wildcats, Hilltop Horse Club...  Rally will be at noon.  Emphasis is on reaching our city’s youth.

As national initiatives have tried to suggest to our nation, Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off.  MLK did much for our nation and also impacted the world with his lessons of non-violence and justice.  He certainly didn’t say “I may not get there with you” in his I Have a Dream speech for people to be sleeping-in or reaching for the remote control on the third Mondays of January.  It will be well worth your while to help KC properly honor this iconic American.

You are invited for any or all of an interesting day on the 16th: MLK Forum at 8:30, Breakfast at 9:30, Marade at 11.  Your attendance, support, donations, and goodwill are very welcomed.

Peace,

Dave

FYI, in addition to the MLK Marade on the 16th (march-parade like Denver has been doing for nearly 30 years), there is another MLK march that is happening on Saturday the 14th.  Occupy KC has endorsed both events and will be participating.

In the future, we hope to combine the many events throughout the city honoring MLK.  The march on the 14th and the marade on the 16th will be combining next year for the Second Annual MLK Marade.  It is long overdue for KC to have one really BIG and city-wide event to honor this man of peace, progress, and justice.

Hope you can come out to one or more events.
