If you’re interested in how civic leaders in KC are very actively engaging, consider the Forum emailed below and the three events last week.
Mayor James at the Gem Theater last Wed commented at the video release and panel discussion about race, immigrations, and the American Dream. Though he has no illusions about the years [generations] of work still to be done, he thanked people in and outside the audience for the years of relationships and efforts to try to keep KC from some of the high profile public tragedies occurring in other cities.

Mayor James asks us how many of us have Black, immigrant, or Muslim friends (not just co-workers you may cross paths with during the course of the day, but somebody who you or they have been in each other’s homes and gotten to know one another beyond the superficial). It’s much more difficult to shoot/hate/vote-against/fear… when the blinders are removed.
[Consider recent statistic that more than half of Americans don’t personally know a single Muslim. From lack of direct awareness, ignorance can foment fears/injustices/bad policies…]
Very related to those issues was another documentary early screening and panel discussion last Thursday.
See http://www.raisingofamerica.org/?q=documentary for how these profound issues interconnect. Join the efforts at http://www.raisingofamerica.org/join-campaign. This endeavor covers many facets that will make/break/transform lives (wages, health, education, crime, inequality,
[Consider the documentaries, news, or the book http://newjimcrow.com/. There are now more black people in prison than USA previously had slaves. Since it is 16 times cheaper to take care of a child than to try to imprison/reform an adult, why do we delay acting in our best economic and public safety interests?]
Sunday afternoon at Zion Grove Baptist, MORE2 had a Town Hall with dozen+ member panel bringing together educators, activists, and clergy from diverse backgrounds (Jewish, multiple different Christian faiths, and Muslim).
Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity is local chapter of a network of groups coast to coast (like the group in Chicago that gave Obama his first community organizer job; groups from St Louis to KC in our area, from NY to CA… --http://www.more2.org/about/historical-context/). Every chapter is locally governed, local names, and work to serve the needs of the immediate communities as well as getting smart about how all these issues are nationally connected (http://www.gamaliel.org/Contact/Directory/States.aspx).
Let’s not just look at the news and tsk, tsk.
Let’s do the patient sometimes uncomfortable or inconvenient work by showing up, making new friends, doing our parts for generations of picking up and “carrying water” whenever possible, doing something outside comfort zones...
