I’m not sure if tomorrow 12-4-13 at noon on KKFI will be a replay of the Forum from last Sunday.  The links http://www.kkfi.org/program/all-souls-forum/ and http://www.kkfi.org/program-episodes/cooperation-and-altruism-in-evolution-of-species-with-mindy-walker/ presently have info from the 11-17-13 Forum “Why Can’t the Richest Nation on the Planet Get Education Right?” with Bernard Franklin.

Both Forums are insightful (so can’t lose), but assuming the replay will be the Forum from this past Sunday (
Cooperation and Altruism in Evolution of Species with Mindy Walker), you may find it especially interesting for the varying activities of the groups and individuals on these listservs.

Mindy Walker, Professor of Biology at Rockhurst University quotes Dr. Rilling:
Reciprocal altruism activates a reward circuit, and this activation may often be sufficiently reinforcing to override subsequent temptations to accept but not reciprocate altruism.  This may be what motivates us to persist with cooperative social interactions and reap the benefits of sustainable mutual cooperation.

How do or how can individuals or groups conduct themselves to activate altruism/giving/service/justice in other individuals, groups, society, and our world?

In her Forum, Prof. Walker makes points about how our biology and evolution impacts how we conduct ourselves in matters of justice, politics, Middle East, society…
Can we change (evolve) to better cooperate ourselves towards greater good and efficacy?

Can our individual actions of service or the activities of our groups change to be able to more effectively bridge the empathy gap (that author of Emotional Quotient, Daniel Goleman, references on last night’s Colbert Report) to produce the results that our groups seek?

In addition to the Forums listed in the email forward below, there are three additional Forums for this calendar year (all at 10 am, with Q&A then continued down the hall in the library for more conversation at 11 am):

12-15-13  --Steven Youngblood

Press Coverage of Mideast Conflicts

Steven Youngblood will assess how US media reports on the Mideast, such as the tendency to personify an enemy to better sell military intervention.  He is Director of the Park University Center for Global Peace Journalism, which seeks to frame news coverage to improve prospects for peace without compromising good.

12-22-12   --Scott Burnett

What’s Happening in Jackson County?

What is happening in Jackson County now?  What might we see in the future?  Just what does the Jackson County Legislature do?  Scott Burnett is First District Jackson County Legislator, first elected in 1998.  He has been involved in politics and government for much of his professional life.

12-29-12   --variety of speakers and audience participation

Soapbox Sunday: An Opportunity to Speak Your Piece

This is an opportunity for any person with passion about a topic to speak or perform for about 5 minutes.  Sign up in advance (seek Forum volunteers at any upcoming Forums) or volunteer from the audience as time permits.  Jack Phillips will open and close with a selection of his satirical songs.

Also, look for the January lineup to include Mayor’s State of the City.
