http://allsoulskc.org/sunday/forum.php

The Forum, Kansas City’s longest ongoing conversation, has offered a platform for the discussion of significant issues since 1943. Guest speakers typically focus on issues of political, social justice, moral, educational and artistic significance. Each 10 am presentation is followed by questions and discussion.

15 Jan: "The State of KC’s Inner-City" with Karen Slaughter and Becky Forrest
Inner-city neighborhood association leaders Karen Slaughter and Becky Forrest have spent years seeking to better their inner-city neighborhoods. Now and for the past few years, however, they’re facing the headwinds of runaway foreclosures and home vacancies, unemployment, school closings, and crime. Ms. Slaughter and Ms Forrest will describe the changed landscape, and what it means to our city.

22 Jan: "The Heartland-Oceans Connection" with Elaine Giessel
Elaine Giessel is a Texas educated marine ecologist who handles water quality and other issues for the Kansas Chapter of the Sierra Club. She will examine how the Midwest is connected to the oceans via the Mississippi River watershed and the Gulf and will assess the implications of climate change on the world’s oceans.

29 Jan: "The State of the City" with Mayor Sly James
Kansas City, Missouri mayor, Sylvester James, continues our annual Forum tradition with his presentation on the state of Kansas City. Mayor James was elected 22 March 2011.

January 15: "The Arc of the Universe" with Rev. Jennifer Brooks and the Racial Justice Team
Thoughtful readings, inspirational music, and a sermon based on the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's observation, "The arc of the universe is long but it bends toward justice."

January 22: "The Virtues of Peace" with Rev. Jennifer Brooks
Last month a sermon on "Goodwill" encouraged each of us to be people who walk into a room and beam "photons of goodwill." OK, fine, great idea...but how do we get from here to there? This look at three virtues of peace offers insights into the process and a few practical tools for the inner-peace toolkit.

Few of us are informed enough about food production, acquisition, and labeling to make purchasing choices that are in tune with our values and preferences. This class will engage participants in very simple, yet startling, field and scholarly excursions into the world of the foods we purchase on a daily basis. Course materials include film, book excerpts, and radio broadcast texts. Course participants will be asked to present their own Food Ethnographies at an optional fourth session (April 26th).

Whether OccupyKC, KC’s First Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Marade (march-parade), UN organizations, recent activities at All Souls regarding Women, consider anything you may be willing to do to add your hours/dollars/votes/attention/”foot-power” or attendance in a parade to the cause of women and children in poverty.

Greetings from Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President, Republic of Liberia to All Souls UU Church

…While we acknowledge this progress, it is still a depressing fact that of the 1.3 billion people who live in absolute poverty around the global, 70 percent are women. For these women, poverty goes beyond scarcity and want. It means rights denied, opportunities curtailed and voices silenced. Women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours, but earn only 10% of the income and own 1% of the world’s property. And despite a few note-worthy examples, women are grossly under-represented in policy making and decision-making even though they bring equally beneficially perspective, talents, and abilities to the political arena. …
