This will be a wonderful play for progressives to attend, and it supports a great cause.  Make plans for one of these dates to see this play.  Share this invitation will all your friends.  I am planning to be at the BBQ on the 14th.  Hope to see you there.
Peace,
Jim

Dear Progressive:

KKFI, in association with CrossCurrents Culture, presents a live theater production (1937: One Helluva Year) that accomplishes several goals:

  • Raises needed funds for KKFI Community Radio, KC’s ONLY progressive radio station (Democracy Now; Jim Hightower; Heartland Labor Forum; Tell Somebody; Alternative Radio; Free Speech Radio; Eco Radio KC…more.)
  • Portrays the important role played by organized labor in the fight for workers’ rights during the last Great Depression
  • Dramatizes the connection between the fight for workers’ rights and the fight for racial and gender equality
  • Brings together the progressive community for an evening of theater and Barbecue.

Why 1937?

1937 was a watershed year:

  • In 1937, the all black Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters successfully concluded a historic 12 year strike when union president A. Philip Randolph signed a collective bargaining  agreement at the Paseo Baptist Church;
  • In 1937, UAW Local 249 fought for fair working conditions in the first sit down strike in the nation at the Winchester plant in Kansas City;
  • In 1937, in New York City, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union mounted Pins and Needles, the first ever Broadway production starring regular working people singing, dancing and telling the stories about their working lives.

These and other stories of the day are told with a combination of drama, comedy and music.

1937: One Helluva Year will be performed at the Just Off Broadway Theater, 3051 Central, Kansas City Mo, on four dates only:  November 13, 14, 20 & 21.  Tickets are $17 in Advance, or $10 for students or unemployed.

SPECIAL KKFI BARBECUE BENEFIT

On Saturday, November 14th, a Special KKFI Benefit Performance with a Barbecue Dinner and Show for a fundraising price of $30 per ticket.  All proceeds from this dinner and show will go to KKFI 90.1FM. (Vegetarian meals provided with advance notice).

Tickets for 1937: One Helluva year can be purchased online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/85179

Or by calling me at KKFI.

Bill Clause
