Tivoli KC
4050 Pennsylvania Ave., KCMO
Foreign researcher and Nobel Laureate Gunnar Myrdal, whose study, An American Dilemma (1944), provided a provocative inquiry into the dissonance between stated beliefs as a society and what is perpetuated and allowed in the name of those beliefs. His inquiry into the United States’ racial psyche becomes a lens for modern inquiry into how denial, cognitive dissonance, and unrecognized, unconscious attitudes continue to dominate racial dynamics in American life.
Using the story of Gunnar Myrdal’s 1944 investigation of Jim Crow racism as a springboard, American Denial explores the power of unconscious biases and how the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice still impact notions of race and class today.
Archival footage, newsreels, nightly news reports, and rare Southern home movies from the ’30s and ’40s thread through the story, as well as psychological testing into racial attitudes from research footage, websites, and YouTube films.
After the film, we’ll discuss historic and current issues of race with community partners. PLEASE NOTE: The program and film start at 11 a.m., so please plan to arrive at least a few minutes early. See below for when it will be shown on TV19.

Building Solidarity and Fighting Oppression with Representatives from One Struggle KC
All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church Kansas City, Missouri
4501 Walnut St, KCMO
Join us for a conversation on how all oppression is linked, building solidarity and why we all have a vested interest in dismantling the current systems of oppression.
Along with discussing what we've been doing since the uprising in Ferguson, Missouri last summer, One Struggle KC will discuss how, locally, we're tackling the difficult issues of systemic racism, police brutality, economic exploitation of poor and oppressed communities, and disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline feeding the prison and military industrial complexes in the context of the failed "War on Drugs." There will be a 30 minute panel discussion, followed by Q&A from the audience.
