KIPP schools are succeeding at educating low-income minority students. One of these free public charter schools now teaches about 200 fifth through seventh grade students in Kansas City’s urban core. The school’s leader, Jon Richard, will talk about what KIPP is doing for kids in KC.

UMKC Law School professor Patrick Randolph has been a visiting professor and lecturer at Chinese universities. He’ll talk about what the Chinese think about the economy, Taiwan, human rights and other issues.

Sunday, November 22 - 10:00a.m.      Is Network TV Serving the Public? - Charles Davis
Does TV news serve the public or its investors? What don’t the networks tell us? Discussing these and other questions will be Charles Davis, executive director of the Freedom of Information Center and a journalism professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

November 10: Special Presentation by Dan Spigel Countering Hate Through Films, with film clips from House of the Generals

The speaker will discuss ways to counter hate through film. He will show clips from his movie, House of the Generals, based on the lives of his mother and her family who lived through the Russian Revolution, the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union and the Holocaust.

 

November 17: What Would Jesus Buy?  Rob VanAlkemade • 2007

As an antidote to the start of holiday shopping, watch a subversive performance art group bring its anti-consumption message to consumers. Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir are on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse.  The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America’s mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture.

Before launching interfaith work in 1985, he was minister of Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church.
