The problem is, sometimes it's a bit too loose, a bit too eager to let you free in that world. And all of the things I see Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord really trying to do, particularly on the RPG front, don't really seem to amount to much. It isn't long before you'll be skipping exploring the villages and towns entirely, in favour of the landing screen where you can buy and trade and talk to characters immediately instead. And you won't care what they're saying or who they are, because the quests are forgettable and so are they. All I've done in five hours is ride from place to place doing variations of the same thing, none of it particularly that exciting.

But I can see - or I suspect - that it will be. I can see larger armies riding around the map, and larger forces and kingdoms at work, and I know that, in time, I'll be competing with them. And I've seen snippets of mounted enemies in action and it is thrilling the speed they move at. But it's the 'how to break into that?' that's is frustrating me, because the answer always seems to be: time. Time for me to observe and learn so I can bend the formula to my ends. Time to learn what to trade, who to hire, how to fight. Then, I will begin to master the simulation I'm butting up against now. The question is, do I - or you - have enough time and inclination to do it?

As with other ranged weapons, the limited ammo in each battle means that using them on mounts will be a waste of resources. This means that the Unhorser, even with the 40 percent increased damage, is not a worthwhile perk.

If you often find you're fighting small battles and running out of ammunition is not an issue for you, Puncture is a great alternative to increase your damage against heavily armored troops by ten percent, and the damage of your ranged troops by half that amount.

Mounted Crossbowmen is also a decent perk if you are not using crossbowmen in your army, as it lets you reload heavier crossbows on horseback. Crossbows are not as effective as bows while mounted, hence why Counter Fire is the preferred perk at this level.

Steady is another great addition if you plan on using crossbows on horseback, but even while mounted you can use the Sniper perk to land more accurate shots. With previous perks increasing your headshot damage, and with a bit of a practice, you can become a devastating marksman with a crossbow.

The ninth perks in the crossbow skill tree are Hammer Bolts and Pavise, and they are both strong and useful. Hammer Bolts give your crossbow hits a chance to dismount targets, while increasing the damage of crossbow troops under your command, and Pavise gives you a chance to block projectiles with a shield on your back.

While Pavise can be a great defensive perk, it requires you to turn your back to the enemy while reloading, and as the commander of your army, it's better if you're able to pay attention to the battlefield at all times. Hammer Bolts is a fantastic offensive choice, allowing you to dismount the enemy cavalry, and giving a considerable damage increase to your troops.

Parents need to know that Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is a downloadable single-player/multiplayer action RPG (role-playing game)/strategy hybrid available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. This is a sequel to the 2008 game, Mount & Blade. Players will choose from one of six cultures and seek to become the greatest superpower in the world, using either wit and persuasion or war and violence to meet their goals. Inevitably, players will engage in many battles against other families or kingdoms with their armies, leading to bloodshed and dead bodies scattered across the battlefield. Some of the weapons involved include swords, crossbows, javelins, maces, and warhammers. With much of the game centered around violence, chaos, and deception, it's hard for any positive themes or role models to shine through. It will take players quite some time to understand the game's mechanics as they'll have to maintain their lands and families, expand their reach, and prepare to defend themselves against any who might oppose them. There's a surprising amount of diverse representation present through the (fictional) cultures within the game, comprised of varying body types and skin tones. Unfortunately, the game doesn't go beyond the surface with any potential cultural nuances. Drinking can be observed within taverns where characters are noticeably drunk, and players can even drink a beer or ale in celebration.
