Fireworks related injuries remain high, turning many Fourth of July celebrations from fun and festive, to a trip to the emergency room. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging consumers to either leave fireworks to the professionals or take steps to celebrate safely when using consumer-grade fireworks.

According to new CPSC data announced today on the National Mall, there were 11 reported fireworks-related deaths in 2022, mostly associated with mortar-style devices. Five of those deaths were associated with fireworks misuse, with victims ranging from 11 to 43 years of age.

Nationwide, in 2017, eight people died and more than 12,000 were injured badly enough to require medical treatment after fireworks-related incidents. Of these, 50% of the injuries were to children and young adults under age 20. Over two-thirds (67%) of injuries took place from June 16 to July 16. And while the majority of these incidents were due to amateurs attempting to use professional-grade, homemade or other illegal fireworks or explosives, an estimated 1,200 injuries were from less powerful devices like small firecrackers and sparklers.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fireworks started an estimated 12,264 fires in 2021, including 2,082 structure fires, 316 vehicle fires, and 9,866 outside and other fires. These fires caused 29 civilian injuries and $59 million in direct property damage. These fires are not only caused by commercial/consumer fireworks, but also by unregulated novelty fireworks that are sometimes purchased at local supermarkets.

During the July 2022 seasonal reporting period, 44 hospitals and facilities reported a total of 168 injuries. Approximately 1/3 of all injured persons suffered multiple injuries. More than 50% of all injuries affected hands (23%), injuries to the head/face (15%) and eyes (13%). Second degree burns were the leading type of injury at 21% followed by first degree burns at 17%. Lacerations accounted for 13% of the injuries and abrasions at 13%. Lacerations and Abrasions combined for 26% of injuries. Dismemberment/amputation injuries increased to 20 as compared to 7 in 2021. There is no requirement for healthcare providers to report fireworks injuries and we appreciate their efforts.

On the Fourth of July, many animals become so frightened by the noise and commotion of fireworks that they run from otherwise familiar environments and people, and sadly become lost. They may also suffer devastating or even fatal health effects from the stress. The sudden bright flashes and sounds can cause wild animals to run into roadways, resulting in more car accidents than normal. Wildlife rehabilitation centers are often flooded with traumatized, injured and orphaned wild animals after the holiday. Keep the tips listed below in mind to keep your furry family members safe and calm during the 4th of July.

Soon, paper tubes came to replace the bamboo stalks, and the Chinese discovered that their fiery sticks could be used for more than just scaring away ghosts and celebrating special events. By the 10th century, they had developed crude bombs and begun attaching firecrackers to arrows that rained down on their adversaries during military engagements. Two hundred years later, they learned how to fire explosives into the air and guide them toward enemy targets, essentially building the first rockets. Used outside the field of battle, the same technology allowed fireworks masters to put on the first aerial displays.

By the time of the Renaissance, pyrotechnic schools were training fireworks artists across Europe, particularly in Italy, which became famous for its elaborate and colorful displays. It was the Italians who in the 1830s became the first to incorporate trace amounts of metals and other additives, creating the bright, multihued sparks and sunbursts seen in contemporary fireworks shows. Earlier displays only featured booming sounds, orange flashes and faint golden traces of light.

In the 1890s, rampant detonation of fireworks, particularly by unskilled ruffians, drove concerned citizens to form the Society for the Suppression of Unnecessary Noise, which lobbied for restrictions. Today, most states regulate how and where fireworks may be used, as well as the types of explosives consumers may buy. These laws notwithstanding, nearly 9,000 Americans were hurt by fireworks in 2009, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, with a disproportionate number of injuries occurring in July. Experts recommend precautions such as only detonating fireworks outside, obeying local ordinances, keeping water handy in case of a fire, preventing children from handling explosives and, most of all, using common sense. Visit the website of the National Council on Fireworks Safety for more tips.

All FIREWORKS (with the exception of sparklers) ARE ILLEGAL in Connecticut and may not be sold, purchased or used, with the exception of regulated fireworks displays by state licensed, professional pyro-technicians at sites which have been approved by state and local officials.

Please leave fireworks in the hands of professionals by attending a professional fireworks show in lieu of creating your own show. The public displays are conducted by licensed professionals and the firework sites are inspected and receive approval prior to the events.

Brilliant fireworks displays are fun to watch but have the potential for high concentrations of smoke, which can have health effects. This is especially true around the 4th of July, when extensive fireworks are part of large events and smaller displays taking place at neighborhood and family gatherings.

The smoke from fireworks is comprised of both coarse and fine particles. The DNR has monitored spikes of extremely high concentrations of these particles, especially fine particles (PM2.5), during and immediately after fireworks displays. Nitrogen and sulfur, used to create color and special effects, can combine with oxygen to form nitric and sulfuric acids which are very hard on the lungs. The smoke from the displays generally dissipates within a few hours, but individuals may feel lingering health effects. For information about current PM2.5 levels in areas monitored by the DNR, visit Wisconsin's Current Air Quality.

Those most affected are children, elderly adults and individuals with respiratory or cardiac conditions. Short-term exposures can aggravate lung disease, causing asthma and acute bronchitis, and increasing the susceptibility to respiratory infections. In people with heart disease, short-term exposures to the smoke from fireworks have been linked to heart attacks and arrhythmias. For more information, visit Particle pollution.

To minimize the impacts from fireworks smoke, individuals should reduce or eliminate their use of personal fireworks, which tend to concentrate smoke at ground level. Aerial displays at community events, while producing more smoke, are launched higher above ground to dissipate the smoke more completely before reaching people at ground level. Individuals who anticipate a health reaction to the intense smoke of fireworks displays are advised to avoid the display areas and view the fireworks from a distance. Those individuals who are particularly sensitive may want to consider staying indoors (especially after dark) and closing the windows.
