Would it be possible to give us a breakdown of the number of entries
per category?

The folloing message went out on December 16th to all interested
parties, including the primary contact for each team. I apologize if
you didn't receive it, and will paste it here in it's entirety, for
you and anyone else who should have received it but didn't:

Submittals are in!

Monday evening we checked-in and verified all the entry submittals and
were pleased to discover that only one team had failed to submit. That
means we have twenty two teams competing for the $15,000 prizes in
each of the three design challenge categories, with nine entries each
in the Suburban Residential and Green Roadway categories and four in
the Urban Redevelopment category.

Based on a cursory look as we unpackaged the presentation boards and
copied the electronic submittals in preparation for getting them out
to the Expert Judges, I can say unequivocally that we have some truly
good work for them to judge. Innovative, thought-provoking, beautiful
and eye-opening paint the word pictures that come to mind as I try to
describe what we saw. It is a testament to the quality of the teams
and to the level of thought and energy that went into a design effort
that, as one competitor described it, ‘had a lot of moving parts’ when
compared with a typical design competition. These were not easy design
challenges and the talented people who participated certainly rose to
the occasion.

We are grateful for their efforts and for their desire to play a
leadership role in moving sustainable development forward in our
community, laying the foundation for growth and economic development
that serves not only ourselves but future generations of Houstonians.

The next stage in the Competition is the Expert Judging. Our group of
experts will come together to make decisions and determine our
Finalist teams on January 8th, and those who are selected will be
announced on January 11th.

You’ll be receiving an e-Invitation for the Finals Event in the next
few days, so please watch for it. We’ll be holding the event in the
Crystal Ballroom at the Rice on January 27th, in a networking-friendly
format that will allow for time to view all of the presentation boards
submitted and to visit with the all-star cast of leaders in the
development, political and civic arena who will constitute the Finals
Jury Panel.

Thanks to the assistance of the AIA-Houston team, who’ve been
incredibly supportive since this competition was conceived, you’ll
find a link in the invitation which will allow you to purchase your
tickets online. You will definitely not want to miss this event; the
‘lightning’ format finals presentations will undoubtedly be talked
about for years, and seating is not unlimited so be sure to lock in
your seats right away!
