WLA/OPIA lunch with Madeline Garcia Bigelow on Tuesday, October 26th, 12pm in Pound 332.  Bigelow has over 17 years of experience in the field of domestic violence and the public sector and founded the Domestic Violence Project at the Urban Justice Center.  Check with OPIA for one-on-one advising with Madeline as well!

/ELS Screening & Panel on Impact of BP Oil Spill & Other Environmental Disasters

The WLA and Environmental Law Society will be showing a short documentary film entitled "Crude Justice" on 
Wednesday, October 27, from 12-1pm in Pound 101. A panel of law students who have worked on social issues caused or exacerbated by environmental events will follow. Come to hear about fellow student experiences and get great ideas for summer/winter term work that impacts communities with pressing legal issues. Non-pizza lunch.

WLA Panel: Reimagining Public Service: Women in Nontraditional Legal Careers 
 
Reimagining Public Service: Women in Nontraditional Legal Careers Panel will take place Thursday, October 28, 7:15 p.m. in Pound 102.  A panel of women in nontraditional public interest legal jobs will discuss their work and career paths and answer questions about pursuing innovative public service opportunities. The panel will be moderated by visiting HLS Professor Katherine Porter. Buffet dinner provided! Panelists include: Meryl Kessler, Legal Director, Discovering Justice; Joan Meschino, Executive Director, Massachusetts Appleseed; Zoe Paolantonio, Co-Director/Principal Legal Advocate, Domestic Violence Institute at Boston Medical Center; Margaret Van Deusen, Deputy Director/General Counsel, Charles River Watershed Association.

WLA/HALA: A Discussion with Judge Solomy Bossa of the ICTR

Successes and Challenges of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda: A Discussion with Sitting Judge Bossa. Please join Harvard African Law Association and the WLA for an exciting paper presentation and discussion with Judge Solomy Bossa of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR).  Judge Bossa is the former secretary of the International Association of Women Judges, and has served as a Judge of the East African Court of Justice and the High Court of Uganda. Dinner will be served! Mon., Nov. 1, 6PM, Griswold 110.

Federalist Society Event Featuring Diana Furchtgott-Roth

The Federalist Society presents Diana Furchtgott-Roth, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and former chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor. Her remarks will be based on a recent article she wrote entitled, "How Obama Gender Politics Undermine America."  Remarks will be given Tuesday, October 27th at 1pm in Austin East. Lunch provided.

Israeli Domestic Violence Legal Specialist

HLS Alliance for Israel is sponsoring the following discussion: Religion and Law in Israel: The Challenges of Advocacy in Israeli Rabbinic Courts on Wednesday, October 27th at 6pm in Hauser 104.  Join us for a discussion with Israeli advocate Esther Sha’anan about the challenges and frustrations of legal representation in Israeli rabbinic courts. Esther Sha’anan was born in Canada, and has lived in Israel since 1980.  Her first career in Israel was in the field of Jewish Education; in 1994 she began legal studies and in 1998 was admitted to the Israel Bar.  She lives in Jerusalem, where she practices family law. She specializes in issues of domestic violence and for five years served as legal counsel for two women’s shelters.  Since 1999 she has appeared before both rabbinic and family courts throughout Israel. RSVP to jhfri...@jd12.law.harvard.edu for free kosher vegetarian
