40th Anniversary of Our Bodies Ourselves Author Panel
On Monday, April 4, from 12pm – 1pm in Austin West, Come celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the foundational feminist health text, Our Bodies Ourselves by listening to a panel of the authors, Joan Ditzion, Judy Norsigian, Miriam Hawley, Wendy Sanford and Paula Doress-Worters. Authors will speak about how they originated the idea of OBOS, how the idea transformed, and what remains to be done today. Burrito lunch will be served.
2011 Freedom Seder
The WLA is honored to be a part of this year's Freedom Seder, which is being spearheaded by the JLSA and BLSA. This year's Freedom Seder is an opportunity for our communities to commemorate our histories, to celebrate our victories, to recognize our shared stake in the social justice challenges of our generation. Please join us on April 4th, at 7pm in Ropes Gray, as we explore these ideas through the structure of this ancient Passover tradition.

Repression, Religion, Revolution and Rights: Uprisings in the Middle East, North Africa and Beyond
Karima Bennoune, professor of law at Rutgers University, has recently returned from research travel to Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia. On Thursday, April 8, from 12 to 1pm in Lewis 202, she will discuss current human rights struggles in North Africa, especially as they affect regional women’s movements. In particular, she will explore the dynamics of local protest movements, the role of law reform in current transitions, and the difficulties involved in confronting the challenges to human rights posed by dictatorship and by fundamentalism. This event is being co-sponsored by HLS Advocates for Human Rights, the Women’s Law Association, the Middle Eastern Law Students Association and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University. Join the Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review and OPIA for a panel of 5 HLSers (both grads and current students) who worked on the '08 Presidential Campaign. Panel topics will cover: 1) how to get a job on the campaign; 2) different opportunities on the campaign; and 3) the benefits of having a job on the campaign. HLS: Racial Disparities in Health Care
Forty Years after the end of the Jim Crow era and the passage of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, there remain large racial disparities in the American health care system. This panel will explore the strengths and weaknesses of various policies that may be employed to alleviate ongoing racial health disparities. Such policies include those that enhance the enforcement or reach of existing civil rights laws and those that call for more direct and targeted quality-improvement initiatives. In addition, the panel will discuss those aspects of the Affordable Care Act that may lead to reduced disparities in care. Panelists: David Barton Smith, Anup Malani, Gregg Bloche, and Amitabh Chandra; Moderated by Petrie-Flom Academic Fellow Michael Frakes. With light lunch. National Immigrant Justice Center’s U Visa Workshop
The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) works to secure protections for vulnerable immigrant populations, including immigrant victims of domestic violence. U visas provide protection against deportation and access to immigration benefits for victims of certain crimes if applicants demonstrate cooperation with law enforcement and meet other legal requirements. If you are fluent or nearly fluent in Spanish and want to help immigrant victims of domestic violence, we need your help. No previous experience in immigration law is required. NIJC is hosting a U Visa Workshop on Saturday, April 9, 2011, where law students and recent law school graduates will work directly with clients to prepare and submit their applications.
