WLA Course Selection Mingler

On Monday, November 1st (tomorrow!), from 9-10 am in Lewis 102, come mingle with your fellow WLA members to get informal advice and opinions on course selection for the Spring Semester. 1Ls, come hear from 2Ls and 3Ls; 2Ls and 3Ls come give and get advice!  Breakfast will be served!

WLA/HALA: A Discussion with Judge Solomy Bossa of the ICTR 

Successes and Challenges of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda: A Discussion with Sitting Judge Bossa. Please join Harvard African Law Association and the WLA for an exciting paper presentation and discussion with Judge Solomy Bossa of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR).  Judge Bossa is the former secretary of the International Association of Women Judges, and has served as a Judge of the East African Court of Justice and the High Court of Uganda. Dinner will be served! Mon., Nov. 1, 6PM, Griswold 110.

Gender Perspectives from the Global South - Gita Sen 

The WLA Presents Gender and Globalization: Perspectives from Women in the Global South, a Conversation with Professor Gita Sen on Tuesday November 2, 12 - 1pm in Pound 201. Dr. Gita Sen, a pioneer in the field of gender and development, will discuss globalization, development, and international engagement from the perspective of women in the Global South. Lunch provided! See attached poster.

Women in Law & Business Panel

Are you a woman at HLS interested in a career in corporate law or business? Please join us for our 'Women in Law & Business Panel' on November 3, 2010 at 12:00 PM in Austin Hall West. The panel will feature Nancy Browne (Managing Director, Goldman Sachs), Niloo Howe (Managing Director, Paladin Capital), Ronit Berkovich (Partner, Weil Gotshal), Nicole Levin-Mesard (Partner, Debevoise & Plimpton) and Marisa Wesely (Partner, Simpson Thacher). WLA 1L Summer Firm Jobs Panel

Come listen to a panel of 2Ls answer questions and share insider tips about the 1L summer firm job search.  A variety of geographic regions will be represented, including New York, California, Washington D.C. and Texas. Thursday, November 4, 12-1pm in Pound 335 - Lunch provided! Co-sponsored by HALB.

Strategies and Challenges of Prosecuting Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault 

Hear from a panel of local prosecutors discussing the challenges in domestic violence and sexual assault prosecutions.  Moderated by Professor Alex Whiting.  Nov. 8th, 12:00-1:00, Pound 107.  Lunch provided.

Gender Jobs Panel

On Thursday, November 11th in Austin East, from 12-1pm, come hear 2Ls and 3Ls talk about their summer experiences working for women's rights (domestic and international), reproductive rights and LGBT rights organizations, and learn how you can apply to work in these fields.  Non-pizza lunch served!  Co-sponsored by WLA, HLSRJ, JLG and LAMBD.

Making International Connections: WLA JD/LLM Networking Banquet

Interested in working abroad? Thinking about interning in international human rights? Come to a WLA banquet to meet LLM and SJD students in order to find out about opportunities in their home countries and make new friends!  Dinner servedFriday November 12th7-9 pm, John Chipman Gray.

JLG Student Note Competition

As many of you may be embarking on winter writing, please consider the Journal of Law & Gender (JLG) 2011 Student Note Competition, open only to current HLS students. The winner will be published in the Summer 2011 issue of the JLG and may have the opportunity to present his or her scholarship at the JLG's spring symposium alongside preeminent gender studies professors. Winter writing proposals (for credit) are due on Friday November 5, so act fast!

The title of the symposium will be Sexual and Reproductive Rights: Barriers to Access, Roadmaps to Fulfillment. We encourage writers to explore this theme in connection with one of the following topics: The feminization of HIV and poverty; Critical race studies and intersectionality; Gender-motivated violence and patriarchy; Queer theory; International law and human rights; Abortion and trauma-based restrictions

Articles on topics outside the above listed will be accepted and strongly considered, but preference will be given to outstanding student writing in the area of sexual and reproductive rights. All submissions are due by January 21, 2011.
