hledger on Sandstorm

Can an existing journal be uploaded into an hledger on sandstorm.io?

This would be a handy way to enable an accountant to query the journal.

I believe not at present. We used to have that feature (a journal edit form), and it should be in the commit history. I'd welcome a pull request to re-enable it as an option, controlled by a command line flag eg.

I've been thinking about switching to hledger from quickbooks. I sent to the accountant an hledger balance report and the csv formatted copy of the journal, and asked whether he could prepare the year-end statements and tax return from these.

He replied:

I think that the HLedger files should be fine for our year-end purposes.  As I mentioned, we will take the trial balance and input the values into our systems.  We also use the General Ledger journal entries for reference and to help understand the values.  It seems like these reports would work fine for that purpose.

I just assumed that it would be easier for him to view the journal using the browser interface instead of using the csv file. I'm not quite sure how to offer this to him myself so sandstorm would be an alternative if I could upload the journal. I would like very much to switch over to hledger, but don't want to impose an additional burden on the accountant.

thanks! The community is growing and you are welcome. 

Real-world details such as these, regarding working with accountants, are quite interesting and valuable.

I wouldn't have expected the accountant to be happy with a CSV file. Props to them. I would have guessed register reports for each important account would be more useful. 

I agree that a live hledger-web instance provides most insight, at least to you or me. If it's clear and easy enough to be useful to your accountant, that's a win. If you're technical it's easy to set one up on a cheap VPS. I can see a sandstorm-hosted instance would be much easier, if only you could your journal file somehow. I don't actually know if there's a (non-hledger) way to do it.

Even better would be for you to ask which aggregates they want, and write a script that will render just that in a single page, inverting the signs where needed.

Yes you can upload a journal to sandstorm!

First you open Hledger Web and download a backup from sandstorm. It will come as a ZIP file downloaded.

Then you open the zipfile and go into: /data/lib/hledger/

It contains the file Ledger. Replace the file with your own data. But keep the name as Ledger.

I was able to add an include file as well. However I have comment lines at the top of the file and had to remove those to make it work.

Now goto your Grains and restore the backup onto sandstorm and you'll have it all there!

Just playing with hledger-web on sandstorm, reminded me again, why I went to hledger-ui.

I really miss the fact that the left column won't reflect search function inputs... :-(

It did at one point, but there were downsides. Trying to meet the goal of usability for novices, and to stop hledger-web devouring all available time, I steered for the nearest simple stable design and left it there. Since then I've been trying out UI ideas in hledger-ui, where it's cheaper. I'd love to see more web UI experiments. Forks of hledger-web, a web-based clone of hledger-ui, hledger-api clients, a web app built with https://github.com/tdammers/sprinkles anyone ?

I remember the earlier conversation and adding cli parameters resolved my issue.

But with sandstorm we do not have access to the cli (I think) and therefore in-app updates of the journal column would be beneficial.

I cannot promise I'll have time myself to learn haskel and tinker with the web-ui...
