In 1973, at the age of 69, Oxford academic A L Rowse published the work that would establish his name internationally. Shakespeare The Man was described as 'the first three-dimensional biography of Shakespeare', and in its most sensational chapter, Rowse claimed to have decoded Shakespeare's sonnets, finally deciphering the true identity of the playwright's mysterious Dark Lady.
