Hello,

For Syndromic Surveillance,  NIST requires 3141-9 LOINC Code, however for other certification criteria's like b1 (Transitions of care), 29463-7 LOINC code is needed.
Since, for our given system, we can use only one LOINC code, is it okay, if can use 29463-7 LOINC code ?

It is not okay to use the 29463-7 LOINC code for weight in the Weight OBX segment of syndromic surveillance HL7 v2 messages. Only LOINC Code 3141-9 is to be used.

The validation in the NIST HL7 v2 Syndromic Surveillance Test Suite is based on the named standard in the ONC certification criterion § 170.315 (f)(2) Transmission to public health agencies – syndromic surveillance, namely HL7 v2.5.1 PHIN Messaging Guide for Syndromic Surveillance: Emergency Department, Urgent, Care, Inpatient and Ambulatory Care, and Inpatient Settings, Release 2.0 of April 21, 2015.

This implementation guide specifies the use of the 3141-9 LOINC Code in OBX-3 for “Body Weight Measured”, as you will see on page 116 of the guide. Therefore, the Test Suite will appropriately generate an error notification if the 29463-7 LOINC Code is used to populate OBX-3.

Thank you for your question,

Sheryl
