Initial Release of the NIST Syndromic Surveillance Test Suite Edition 2

NIST is pleased to announce the initial release of the Syndromic Surveillance Test Suite Edition 2. Users can continue to use the existing tool or migrate to Edition 2 (For the updated requirements – 2019 Implementation Guide). The tool targets the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy (ASTP)/Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health IT Standards Version Advancement Process (SVAP) 2024 for the § 170.315(f)(2) Transmission to public health agencies – syndromic surveillance criterion.

Requirements for Edition 2 is based on the HL7® Version 2.5.1 Implementation Guide: Syndromic Surveillance, Release 1 - US Realm Standard for Trial Use, July 2019 and the NIST Errata and Clarification Guidelines document (September 2025). The latter records errata and clarification in the implementation guide discovered during the tool build process.

The NIST Syndromic Surveillance Test Suite Edition 2 provides validation improvements, profile viewer enhancements, support for dynamic value sets, and other general improvements. Additionally, adapted and new test settings and test cases have been developed. For a comprehensive list of feature enhancements and tool details, please refer to the Release Notes under the documentation tab.
