Apologies if this has been discussed before, I could not find any topics related to this.

In the Implementation guide, the PID-11 field is described as:

PID-11 Patient Address (XAD) 00114

Definition: This field contains the mailing address of the patient. Address type codes are defined by HL7 Table 0190 - Address Type.
Multiple addresses for the same person may be sent in the following sequence: The primary mailing address must be sent first in the
sequence (for backward compatibility); if the mailing address is not sent, then a repeat delimiter must be sent in the first sequence.

The Address Type table includes a value "M" for mailing address, which appears to be the correct one to send based on this information.

However, the validator rejects an "M" in this field, and is expecting an "L" for legal address instead.

So, we are having trouble figuring out which to send. Could someone clarify?

Thanks.

Hi Garry,

This topic has not been discussed here before. The IG states “This field is used for any type of address that is meaningfully associated with the client/patient.”

PID.11 Usage is RE, and PID.11.7 Usage is R. In the Test Cases where test data are listed for PID.11, the value provided by the immunization subject matter experts for PID.11.7 is “L” and it is categorized as Test Case Fixed Data. The Context-based Validation in the test tool is checking for the presence of the exact data and will generate an error notification if “L” is not used. The EHR technology being tested must be able to send “L” in this field.

In the Test Cases where test data are not provided for PID.11, “M” can be used for PID.11.7 if PID.11 is populated in your message. “M” also may be used for this field in messages validated by the Context-free Validation in the test tool.

Thank you for your question.

Sheryl

Thanks for the prompt reply.

One further clarification.

As quoted in my first message, the Implementation Guide states that the mailing address must be the the first repetition in PID-11 (and if not sent a blank first repetition must be sent), however the text case fixed data does not appear to conform to this, as it sends the legal address in the first repetition.

Thanks again!

Hi Garry,

The IG is not specific about a particular code, it just says “primary mailing address”. For certification testing purposes, “L” is expected by the test tool; but the ATL could allow “M”.

Thank you,

Sheryl
