Good afternoon,

I am working on coding our immunization system to send the VIS information OBX segments for those immunizations where VIS information is required.  My questions is how do I determine what the individual CVX codes are for the individual vaccines vaccine type of the combination vaccine?

Example:  CVX  110 – DTaP-HepB-IPV – This CVX code is sent in the RXA.

Test case 7_3 complete record breaks CVX 110 into vaccine type CVX  107 for DTaP, CVX 10 for Polio, and CVX 44 for HepB (CVX is actually the Hep B dialysis).

How were you able to determine that CVX codes 107, 10, and 44 are the individual CVX codes that comprise the combination vaccine that corresponds to CVX 110?    Since CVX 107 is the DTaP NOS, I would have thought the Hep B NOS CVX code of 45 would have been used verses the 44 for HepB dialysis.   I tried substituting CVX 20 DTaP for CVX 107, but the NIST tool is specifically looking for CVX code 107.

Is there a table available  that maps the individual component CVX codes to use in  the VIS vaccine type OBX segments for those CVX code vaccines that require VIS information?

Thank you.

Dawn

Dawn,

This issue is related to a previous issue, which was address by our SME as follows”

“The issue of the multi-vaccine VIS has lead us to realize that we need to move away from the 3 OBX approach (CVX, publish date, present date) to the 2 OBX approach.  This was initially planned to take advantage of the new bar coding on most VIS. The 2-d bar code can be represented by a numeric string. This string indicates the subject of the VIS and the publication date. The responsibility with VIS is to track each of the 3 data elements. The specific document for each single VIS is different from the multi-vaccine VIS, so we need to indicate them with different values.  CDC has published the table supporting the values for VIS document type. (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/vis-barcodes.htm)”

The current release of the NIST Immunization tool supports the barcode approach. We encourage the use of the barcode approach especially for the IZ-Complete_Record test cases.

Additional information on recording immunizations and associated VIS data for multi-vaccines can be found on the FQA section of the “Understanding Immunization Message” document.

As our SME explained, for the vaccine type approach the principle is that we use the unspecified formulation of the vaccine.  In the case of polio, that is CVX 89.  When a combo vaccine is administered, then there are sets of OBX for each vaccine group, unless the multi-vaccine VIS is given. Note that the vaccine to vaccine group mapping on our website is useful for figuring out the CVX to use.  For some, there is no unspec vaccine because there is only one vaccine (MMR, for instance). http://www2a.cdc.gov/vaccines/iis/iisstandards/vaccines.asp?rpt=vg.

Additional clarification on how the CVX codes are used in the OBX segments to indicate Vaccine Type can be found on page 2 in the 1.0 General Clarifications section. These documents are posted on the Immunization Test Tool Documentation tab.

Thanks,

Sandra
