to HKN/IEEE merger
It concerns me that the impression Dr. Eisenstein (VP of HKN) gave us
is inconsistent with what Moshe Kam (VP of IEEE) told Joseph Ernst.
It seems that IEEE's decision makers are nearly unanimously in favor
of the merger, while Dr. Eisenstein led us to believe there was just
barely enough support to pass the motions. Dr. Eisenstein may argue
that he never specifically said the motions expire. I would expect
him to emphasize that he only said renegotiation would force a delay
in approval and require approval by a new board. Regardless of
details and exact phrasing of statements, the impressions seem to be
in fundamental disagreement. It is disturbing that when we scrutinize
most of HKN Nationals's statements, we find factual correctness
alongside false impressions. It leaves me to wonder if all students
interpret everything wrong, or if HKN Nationals is unable to
communicate with us effectively, or if HKN Nationals is clever at
giving the questionable impressions they want to give us without
actually saying anything that is untrue.

I propose we make an effort to meet with a few people from IEEE.
They seem very willing to discuss students' reactions to the proposed
merger. I suspect it would be very easy to find one, if not a few
IEEE board members who are willing to meet with us. If IEEE is really
as supportive of the merger as it seems, I expect they would be eager
to hear our concerns, suggestions, and ideas. Furthermore, it would
beneficial to all HKN members trying to decide how to vote, to hear
IEEE's perspective.

I urge everyone, regardless of your current stance on the merger, to
support communication with IEEE. Some may firmly want to block the
merger, and may view meeting with IEEE as a potential way of working
out an agreement that may be approved in the future. Some may firmly
want to pass the merger, and may view meeting with IEEE as a potential
barrier to passing the merger right away. In Beta's letter, they
emphasized the importance of selflessness. I believe that
communication with IEEE will result in better understanding within
IEEE of how HKN students feel, and better understanding among HKN
students of the merger in general. The more information and
understanding that all parties involved have, the more likely we are
to make a decision that is best for everyone. I think it would be
horribly unfortunate for any of the three parties to make a decision
without knowing the whole story. In the spirit of selflessness, I
hope that we can all continue to work together to gather and
distribute as much information about the proposed merger as possible.

What does everyone think? Beta- Since you seem to have the most
relevant contact, Moshe Kam, do you have any interest in asking him
for his thoughts on this idea?

I agree with this assessment and agree that we should work to arrange
a meeting with IEEE executives. They have provided us with consistent
and verifiable information for all our requests to date.

Current IEEE Past-President Leah Jamieson is Dean of Engineering at
Purdue University. We can probably arrange a meeting with her, but be
aware that her schedule is really busy. We requested a meeting in
December about the merger and had our meeting with her in March.
Teleconference is probably the better solution to this problem, since
it's a little harder to get to West Lafayette than Chicago and I doubt
she would fly to another location to meet with HKN.

Joey, can you provide an introduction?

Dr. Moshe Kam is a strong supporter of the merger. He is more than
willing to discuss any concerns that you may have. He is a great
source of information. In his correspondence with me he indicated
that he would be more than happy to speak with other students about
the merger. His e-mail is below.

I have contacted Dr. Kam and Dr. Jamieson. I am working with Dr. Kam
to arrange a meeting for IEEE representatives and HKN students. As
expected, he is very supportive of the idea of meeting. The meeting
will serve as IEEE's opportunity to tell us exactly how they view the
merger, and exactly how they see the post-merger structure. It will
also provide students an opportunity to present our concerns.

Recently, only members from Alpha and Beta have been active on the
forum. It is hard to gauge interest without broader participation. I
would feel bad asking IEEE to put forth lots of effort to meet with us
if only a few students were interested. Please post here if you or
someone from your chapter is interested in participating in the
meeting, either in person or via conference call.

Dr. Kam will hold the meeting in Chicago, IL or in Pittsburgh, PA,
depending on how many students would be able to attend. Please let me
know if someone from your chapter would be interested in traveling to
either location to attend the meeting. There will most likely be a
conference call option as well. Also let me know if you're interested
in participating through a conference call.

Dr. Kam would like to make arrangements as soon as possible, so please
reply quickly.

Thanks.

Though we are unable to physically send representatives anywhere as
the end of our semester is approaching and schedules are busier, Beta
Epsilon is definitely interested in a teleconference with Dr. Kam.
Andrew, thanks very much for arranging this and contacted the IEEE
representatives. What day/time is Dr. Kam available?

Dr. Kam will host a teleconference early next week. I am still
waiting for him to confirm the date and time, but tentatively, it will
be Tuesday, April 1st, from 12pm-1:30pm Eastern Time.

At his request, I am sending Dr. Kam a list of questions Thursday
night. He will begin the conference by addressing those questions.
Afterwards, he will have a live question and answer session. If you
have any questions for IEEE that you would like Dr. Kam to answer in
his opening, please post them here, or send them to me by email before
Thursday at 7pm.

Dr. Kam confirmed the time, and I just sent the following email to all
faculty advisors and chapter presidents.

Dear Faculty Advisors and Chapter Presidents,

After the March 7th meeting with HKN Vice President, Dr. Eisenstein,
many students wanted to learn more about IEEE's perspective on the
proposed merger and IEEE's plans for HKN if we approve the merger.

To that end, the leader of IEEE's merger committee, Dr. Moshe Kam, has
offered to host a teleconference with HKN students. The conference
call will be Tuesday, April 1st, from 12pm to 1:30pm Eastern Time. If
your chapter is interested in participating, please email me to
register and I will send you the conference call information.

Dr. Kam will open the conference call by answering questions I submit
to him in advance. If you have questions you would like answered,
please send them to me by Thursday, March 27th, 7pm.

Sincerely,

Andrew Muehlfeld

Mu chapter will be attending via teleconference. Not sure who or how
many at this time (we're on Spring Break, so not as responsive this
week), but should be at least a few. Is someone planning to record
this meeting? Speaking of recording, were we planning to post
recordings of the previous meeting?

Thanks for setting this up.
