What were the results of the vote for the merger? Did the merger pass
or get voted down? What all do we know?

As of this point, we know nothing. Beta Chapter contacted HKN
Nationals and has not yet received a response to this question.

I called Melissa twice and she didn't know what the interpretation of
the vote was or when the Board was planning on making that
announcement. Over a week ago I e-mailed Dr Irwin and Dr Eisenstein
asking for them to give their interpretation and haven't received a
response. I'm on vacation right now, but when I get back next week I
plan on calling one or both of them. It's rather ridiculous that we
still don't know the outcome.

Wes,

The following message was sent to Chapter Advisers on May 1. Note that
no conclusion is drawn from the count. The vote tracking form
mentioned is an Excel spreadsheet indicating the vote for each
chapter.

===================

Dear HKN Advisors and Members:

As you are all well aware, the past several months have been important
ones for Eta Kappa Nu.

You will recall that in December 2007 you were informed that a
Memorandum of Understanding between HKN and the IEEE that would
involve merging the two organizations, had been developed and signed.
The HKN Board had spent several months in discussions and review of
such a merger and had concluded that it was the best way to ensure the
future of HKN. They also concluded that such a merger could provide
additional opportunities for HKN to allow enhanced services to members
in addition to providing the potential for scholarship funds.

In early April all chapters received materials pertaining to the
merger and members were asked to carefully consider the information
and vote to approve or reject the merger.

The results of that vote are as follows: 62 Chapters voted to approve
the merger; 58 Chapters voted to reject the merger. The vote tracking
form is attached for your review.

The Board of Governors wishes to thank all those chapters that took
the time to consider the issues and vote on the proposal. It should
be noted that the merger issue generated votes from 120 chapters - a
record number. This is in sharp contrast to the 30 chapters that
typically submit votes each spring to approve the organization's new
slate of officers.
Best regards,
J. David Irwin
President

I am living in LA this summer, and will be attending the LA alumni chapter's monthly lunch tomorrow (Thursday, June 12).  If anyone wants me to bring anything up, please let me know.

I recently received my copy of The Bridge, and on the front cover is a
letter from the President of HKN. He is stating that the merger has
gone through, and lists the benefits we would receive from the merger.

He has not mentioned anything about paying IEEE dues in order to be a
part of HKN.... Was some compromised reached, or did he just fail to
leave this part out?

Great job by HKN of notifying the chapters - the ones who are
affected.

Actually, the piece in the Bridge by Dr Irwin is all about the MoU and
not about a successful merger. If you read it carefully, it talks
about how the merger "would do the following". I'm willing to bet it
even went to press before the merger vote was completed.

Beta Chapter has a lawyer working for us pro bono and he is waiting
for a call from Nationals' new lawyer before doing anything else.
Don't worry, Beta Chapter is on top of things and I will post news
here as soon as I hear any.

Yes, Thank you very much. I went back and read the article again, and
it is only about the Memorandum of Understanding.

Also, a big thank you to the Beta Chapter. Rho Chapter sincerely
appreciates all the hard work that has gone into this. I will be
checking back to see the latest news.
