Hi everyone,

Now that we have ballots and the merger vote is due soon, how do you
feel about posting the way each chapter votes on the group space for
others to know? I've asked Kathy Ricker about it, and she said she
does not know if Nationals can make that information public.

I think its a good idea. I don't know if we will be able to get that
many to post (especially if a smaller chapter thinks it has made an
unpopular decision), but i think i would be useful. If everyone that
post is against, and it passes, it would be a little suspicious.

Beta Chapter = AGAINST

As everyone has probably expected, Beta Chapter voted against the
merger at our meeting last night. I think I speak for Beta when I say
that we support posting votes on a volunteer basis.

We will have our meeting for this tomorrow for Iota Lambda. I will post my chapter's response then.

I must have missed that email - when is the merger vote due?

I assume by "that information" Kathy Ricker is referring to a chapter-
by-chapter rundown of the voting. However, according to the bylaws,
they have to provide the official record of the convention to all
chapters. This would include AT LEAST the aye-nay counts if not the
chapter-by-chapter voting information (See HKN Bylaw II.4.G).

I haven't seen the voting materials yet. What is it that we submit?
Is it a yes or no from the chapter, or a tally of individuals' yes and
no votes? Did they comment on whether they will use a simple majority
vote, or a 3/4 vote? What exactly is the vote for? Do they mention
amendments to the constitution?

They do not mention amendments to the constitution in the ballot.
They're just saying it's a contract between HKN and IEEE. Nationals
still intends to go forward with a 1/2 vote instead of a 3/4 vote
because of this. It's unclear if they legally can, but that's only
something to worry about if the final tally comes between 1/2 and 3/4.

I believe you only submit a yes/no vote from the chapter, and each
chapter gets one vote.

For full disclosure, Beta Epsilon's bylaws (I don't know if these are
the same everywhere or not) require a 2/3 vote to approve a national
ballot item. We voted yesterday and had 62.5% approve it (35 out of
56), so it was voted against. I suspect this would have been much
lower had the recent call with IEEE and to a lesser extent the meeting
with HKN Nationals not gone so well.

My chapter has voted but not discussed posting our result here. I
submitted a motion to do so to be voted on at our next meeting.

Given what has transpired so far, I think it's a good idea to demand
some form of auditing of the ballots.

Kappa Phi Chapter (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) voted
against the merger. All members (present at the meeting) voted No,
with the exception of 1 member Abstaining.

Still, too many details need to be addressed...
