Hong Kong Open Source Conference 2014 (3/29) with 20 US/Europe/Asia speakers

20 overseas speakers will join us at the Hong Kong Open Source Conference, to share on various open source and open technology topics. Lead developers of the multi-platform network video player, VideoLAN (VLC), will fly from their Foundation headquarter in Europe to give a keynote speech to introduce the next version VLC, Weatherwax 2.2.

Alternatives to MySQL

Databases are essential to web and mobile development. Recent news casts doubts on MySQL and a number of speakers in the conference will show us alternatives to MySQL. A local speaker will tell us why and how should we migrate to PostgreSQL, we also invited a speaker from SkySQL in Malaysia to tell us why MariaDB 10 is the replacement of MySQL, and a db expert from MongoDB in the US will share how to fine tune MongoDB for performance.

How should we develop Open Data ?

From the Data. One project of OGCIO to the releases of voting record of the Legislative Council in machine-readable format, a number of open data initiatives have been kickstarted by various groups in Hong Kong. g0v.tw is a open source and open data community in Taiwan aimed to improve the society, it is one of the most outstanding open data community in Asia. We invited the co-founder of g0v.tw the famous open source developer in Taiwan - Chia-liang Kao, to describe how g0v.tw make use of open source model and technology to develop a number of open data applications. And Hong Kong R User Group will host a workshop, to share how to use R to hack Hong Kong public data. Data-HK.com is a cloud data application platform to share data and information to the public for supporting the development of research, technology, innovation and business, developed by a team of IVE students, they will tell us few of their projects.
