Hi everyone,

Seems like the time is right to move BootHK in a new direction away from co-working and taking the next step up the ladder into incubator. Starting next week, the fixed desk area will be taken up by the new program and its participants, but we will have space in the hotdesk area for those to work separate to the program.

The lease for the current space will be up in a few months, and we will be looking at where to go from here based on how this pilot cohort does.

Cheers,

Jon

Oh my god, really? It would be the first incubator in Hong Kong if I get this right.

Excited to see the progress here, I really believe the future of local start-ups here in Hong Kong is bright!

Please post more info here as it progress :)

Hi everyone,

I just saw this discussion about the new Startup Boot.Camp so I thought I'd jump in. I'm the guy running the program, which just started and I'm really excited to be doing this since it builds on my own passions for startups and working with founders. You can learn more about the program here: http://boot.hk/pages/startup-bootcamp

I just got to HK earlier this week, but I used to work here and it's great to be back. If I haven't met you before I hope to meet you soon and see what you're working on.

For those of you interested to learn more about what we're doing at Startup Boot.Camp or who just want to say hello, I'm happy to talk.

WOW, Just checked the info, accelerator in Hong Kong? Never imagine that would happen so soon.

Shame that the first camp is launched? In fact, I am still a student and also working on a project with a few friends, I may not be able to apply for the boot.camp as we are working on it with all the time we have.

Just hope we would be able to join the accelerator in the fall.

And, hello Paul :) May I ask for your advice later on fundraising when our project is about to launch? I just didn't see much VCs and angel investors here and are quite worried. Even China has a friendlier environment
 over Hong Kong.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Sure, happy to talk and learn about your work. But, I want to let you know that I'm biased to building products that solve problems and demonstrating traction before you focus on looking for funding. It makes your life easier in the long run.

While HK can certainly develop more support for startups, I was intrigued about building this program here. Today there are lots of programs in the US (though not exactly like this one) but nothing like this in HK. I wanted to build the bootcamp in a place I like among a supportive entrepreneurial community. You can take this first bootcamp as my MVP to test what kind of interest there in HK.

You can get in touch with me at paul.o...@gmail.com or twitter.com/porlando

Hello again, Paul,

I agree on you that start-ups are, and should be built to solve problems. I have seen so many people in Hong Kong always say they want to start something,(創業) but usually they mean opening a store next to another one, and let the leaser / landlord to suck a large proportion of their profit, which will further reduce their ability to make their business bigger to solve some real problem.

I am glad that someone who knows about entrepreneurship is passionate on helping Hong Kong to develop its own start-up circle.

On my project - I do think that our work here is solving problems, but I am not certain if we can / should start monetizing it as we are targeting the consumer internet market.

At the moment, I believe only hard work will bring us to the future, so I will get back to work :)

But I will get in touch with you by email :)

Thanks for your advise,
Jim

Hi everyone,

Following up on the conversation from last month, the first Startup Bootcamp is now about halfway through their 3 months. We've been having a good run of education, mentorship and testing of the startups with potential customers. It's been exciting to work on this in HK. I'm looking forward to running another cohort and helping build great startups here.

I posted information on the next bootcamp, which starts soon, so if you're interested you can learn more about the program and apply here: boot.hk/pages/startup-bootcamp

Let me know if you have any questions. As always, looking forward to talking with you.

Paul
