Hi all,

I need any opinion on 300B SE amp driving Wilson Audio Witt (90dB) or Watt3
Puppy2 (93dB) or JMLab Alcor (92.5dB). Prefer to hear from those who had
heard or own such combo. I am using a Herb Reichert designed DIY 300B job
with Tango X-5S output trans with MASSIVE power trans and parallel rectifier
tubes( GZ37 or 5R4GY to taste, 2 per channel) for those Vaic and Valve Art
300B tubes. I need to know whether a 300B SE amp can drive these speakers to
satisfying levels. I listen to everything, but mainly rock. I am using Tannoy
15" Monitor Gold GRF Rectangular cabinet and Spica TC-50 at the moment.
Frankly speaking, I prefer the sound of the Spica as I like its more modern
sound but I hate its lack of dynamics. Thus I am looking for a new reference
speakers. Any opinion or advise will be deeply appreciated. And of course, I
am getting those speakers USED at a greatly reduced price. Thank you in
advance.

Danny,

For rock music, IMO, you are looking for problem with 300B SE.
Beside, Wilson & JML don't seem to match with tube amps.
I also own TC-50 & like its transparent sound much.

300B SE better be matched with highly efficient horn speakers.

Hi Danny,

I am using a DIY 300B SETA to drive a pair of B&W 803 Series 2 (90db/nominal
8ohm/lowest 3.7ohm)

Before I was using B&W DM17 but like you the bookshelf DM17 just couldn't
satisfy me anymore...and there really are pros and cons after the speaker
change.

Honestly, 8W/channel is not much when driving these speakers. I think if
big sound is what you are looking for (which the 803 or the speakers you
mentioned can deliver with ease) then maybe a push-pull amp with 40W+
/channel is better. However, since I listen to mostly Jazz and light music
the problem is not as big...I would say I am not hearing what the speakers
are really capable of.

Usually when I listen to music I turn the volume to about 12 o'clock
position...the other night I was just curious and I turned it to somewhere
around 3 o'clock...and there is a BIG difference in the soundstage
presentation and liveliness of the music. It was like all of a sudden I was
transported to the recording session and sitting right there with the
audience...before I was at best listening to a recording of the session...I
think you know what I mean. But at 3 o'clock the amp is only capable of
delivering Jazz or something light, if the music is full of big drums or
shit like that which contains a lot of deep bass content...sorry, 300B SETA
simply CANNOT deliver what the 803's are asking for...the amp would simply
go into clipping.

So, I would say if you are not much of a bass fan, 300B can probably fit the
bill very nicely. Otherwise something with a little more juice would
deliver a lot more than simply playing loud.

In fact, I have heard the Klipsch "Legend" series KLF30 driven by 300B and
2A3 SETA...the result is marvelous. The combination gives surprisingly good
bass (good extension in the HF too), solid soundstaging, and simply stunning
reproduction of all types of music content. The only reason I didn't buy
them is the fact that they have the bass port at the bottom of the back
panel and there is no way I can put them in my apartment without blocking
the port somehow. Also the price I paid for the 803 Series 2 was simply too
attractive (I paid only US$1,150 for the pair which are 2 years old only) to
go un-noticed.

Regards,

Richard
