To protest the Republic of China's government's policy of importing
American beef, believed to be extremely unhealthy in Taiwan, a
Ph.D candidate ate cow dung because it is his only way to protest.

The video showing his eating cow dung and cow dung enhanced
American beef hamburger was censored by youtube, but it can
still be accessed from the above site.

Mainly for the video.
Chinatimes.com has an article indicating the polarized
responsed toward the act. But it did not has the news
by itself. In additon the article contains direct quotes,
if you have reaosns to beleive that the quotes are wrong,
please inform.

I cannot say. But he is certainly abnormal in the sense
most other people will not do what he did. BTW, had
you read articles concerning american ground beef was
"manufactured" by combining beef from many sources
and the various suppliers demanded that their beef not
subjected to E coli contamination test?

Anyway, Taiwan's meat importers have said they will not import
American ground beef etc and my government also said they will examine
to delay the process if they are American ground beef.

Personally, I still eat hamburgers and other ground beef products.
But if people like Zhu have problem with American beef, it is also
understandable. Not a sign of craziness although Zhu's choice of
eating cow dung as a mean to protest is certainly abnormal.

Anyway, if some people in Taiwan are hysterical about American
beef, the press must bear some responsibility.

Shaws and Wild Harvest may be contaminated with E. coli and is being
recalled by its processor, authorities said.

Fairbank Farms, Ashville, N.Y., is recalling 545,699 pounds of ground
beef shipped for sale last month to retail stores in Northeast and Mid-
Atlantic states, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Saturday.

USDA inspectors working with state and federal health authorities
became aware of the problem while investigating outbreaks of E. coli
in Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts, agency officials said in a
release.

The suspect beef products were shipped to Trader Joes, Shaws,
Lancaster, Wild Harvest, Price Chopper, BJ's, Ford Brothers and Giant.
Each package had "EST. 492" inside the USDA mark of inspection or on
the nutrition label. The packages had a sell-by date of Sept. 19
through Sept. 28."
