You can try to set the volume to maxium in the mixer. Then set the volume
control in your speaker at a low value. Is there any 拆聲 ? If it has, sound
card problem. if it don't get any 拆聲, buy a better speaker la !
But this happen to my old SB16, but never since AWE !
it is believed that the dymasic range of the sound card is too 'narrow'.
SB16 only 90db, 96db in AWE64 value and 120db under 64 Gold. Now the live
get 196 db ! More than 2 times that SB16 offers !
But CD only get 96db, and mp3 is slightly lower(under96) because it is
compressed!

This kind of 'oversampling' is alway used in HI-FI equipments to improve the
overall audio performance!
I want to know what speakers does the reviews use as audio monitor! What
external D/A conventor they used ? Digital out mainly depends on their
external DACs!
My SBLive is connected to the Onkyo 939 AV decoder +amp and speakers are
Sonus Faber Ground Paino. I heard great different between Gold and Live, but
when using SPDIF of Gold and Live to listen MIDI and wave(Gold doen't
support digital CD-Audio in), there's nearly no different because Gold's
output is 20bit,44.1khz while live get 16bit,48khz !

I was a AWE64 Gold user and now I've bought he SBLive + Optical IO! The
noise of SBLive is improved a lot compare to 64Gold !
But the results shows that there's a 78db S/N ratio in Gold and only 73db
under Live ! But it's fake in my experience!
But a cheap Diamond Mx100 is marked very good for all items while Live
can't, it is a site supported for diamond?
Also, they don't show any benchmarking equipments !
But do u know the formula of calculating dynamic range? The following
text is copied from the manual of a famous sound-editing software
"Sound Forge 4.5"
http://www.sonicfoundry.com
(start)
At what level, then, should a signal be recorded digitally? The
standard method
for digital metering is to use the maximum possible sample amplitude as
a
reference point. This value (32,768) is referred to as 0 decibels, or 0
dB.
Decibels are used to represent fractions logarithmically. In this case,
the
fraction is: sample amplitude divided by the maximum possible amplitude.
The actual equation used to convert to decibels is: dB = 20 log
(amplitude/32,768)
Say you have a sine wave with a peak amplitude of 50% of full scale.
Plugging
the numbers in gives you 20 log (0.50) = -6.0 dB. In fact, every time
you
divide a signal𠏋 amplitude by two, you subtract its dB value by 6 dB.
Likewise,
doubling the amplitude of a signal increases its dB value by 6 dB. If
you kept
dividing your sine wave until its peak amplitude was equal to 1, you鏆
get the
very lowest peak dB possible, -90.3 dB.
(end)
Now try to do the same formula in 16, 20, 24, and 32-bit audio:
16-bit value is +32767 to -32768
20 log(1/32768) = -90.3089...
20-bit value is +524287 to -524288
20 log(1/524288) = -114.3913...
24-bit value is +8388607 to -8388608
20 log(1/8388608) = -138.4737...
32-bit value is +2147483647 to -2147483648
20 log(1/2147483648) = -186.6385...
The above result is the best result possible for different sound
format, all audio equipment must have some distortion to affect these
result. In fact, anything better than -90dB is already perfect for most
people (including me).
I don't know why u said that pcavtech is controlled by Diamond, as I've
found that Diamond card's benchmark is not really much better than
Creative's. What made me believe pcavtech is that I tried to generate
a pure 1khz test tone and a white noise using Cool Edit Pro 1.1
(http://www.syntrillium.com), then make them into soundfont format and
then played these 2 sound from the MIDI port and recorded them back to
wave again (I'm using SB32 PnP, a cheap version of AWE32 without 512k
RAM onboard, but I've upgraded it to 8MB), then I examined the wave
file using Cool Edit Pro's FFT analysis, I found that my card's
frequency response is about 40hz to 18khz, and s/n ratio is about 60dB,
very similar to the result from pcavtech.
You asked me what equipment pcavtech are used, they're Event Gina
(http://www.event1.com) and LynxONE (http://www.lynxstudio.com). These
2 cards are very professional cards, LynxONE even has AES/EBU ports
which is better than S/PDIF. You can search the newsgroup
(rec.audio.pro) to see recording engineers' opinions about these cards
and see how they compare them with Creative's card, I'm not cheating
you.

I found u have 3 replies about my post, thanks to you for so carefully
reading the links I mentioned.
But do u know the formula of calculating dynamic range? (to be more
correct, it should be s/n ratio) The following text is copied from the

although SBLive is internal 32-bit, it's digital output is 16-bit only,
so 196dB is impossible. pcavtech's result is 91dB, it is much more
reasonable. pcavtech rated most of SBLive's digital out as "excellent"
(except frequency response), this showed that pcavtech is not
controlled by Diamond, nor Anti-Creative.
I don't know why u said that pcavtech is controlled by Diamond, as I've
