Ok with the Tour of Friendship and other big races coming up it's time to ramp up the intensity and kick start the always fun Lantau Fast & Furious!.      

Starting 6:45am this Saturday from the Disney Hotel Carpark we will follow the usual format of 2 x 60km loops (Disney - Tung Chung - Airport - Expo - Caribbean Coast - Tung Chung - Disney), with short regroup at the carpark after loop 1, and a coffee stop at Starbucks Tung Chung at the end of loop 2 (and discussion of further ride options for those with time and/or energy left!).   There will be the usual sprint sections and regroup afterwards, as well as plenty of opportunities to rejoin the group on the out and back sections. 

 

And we have some special guests in town from overseas including Timmy Bowman, as well as unconfirmed rumours that Mark McCombe and Drilly Thornton also may be in town and may make a surprise appearance.  

Weather is looking perfect for the weekend so no excuses!.  As usual reply only if you are coming so we know to look out for you.

Hi Bachir people make their own way there some people drive and most others will catch the 6am MTR from Central Station (underneath the airport express check-in terminal) on the Tung Chung (TC) line and get off at Sunny Bay and then cycle down to Disneyland (you should see a group of riders if you turn up to the train station for the 6am MTR and can follow them).

The other option is to hire a van they are also pretty easy to book one via apps like gogovan.

After a fun weekend starting with the Lantau Fast & Furious on Saturday and some great running race results on Sunday (refer Dragons facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/hktriclub?ref=bookmarks) it's back to the regular weekday program with the "extended" reverse Peak loop (including side trip to Chinese International school) tomorrow morning at the usual starting time and route:

NOTE: Don't forget this Saturday is the iconic annual Dragons Race to Enlightenment starting 6:45am from the Disney Hotel Carpark this is an event not to be missed!.  This year we will be amending the course slightly to replace the Beast climb with the more gentle (but longer) Tai O Climb, which is sure to make it a more competitive and open race and provide less early advantage to the climbing specialists.  Compared to the original course the distance is slightly longer by about 4kms but with slightly less climbing.  I will send a reminder later in the week in the meantime you can find all the details here: https://www.strava.com/clubs/21170/group_events/26267

This is the final reminder for the 2015 edition of the Annual Dragons Race to Enlightenment being held this coming Saturday (28th May). 

The event is open to all and the main group will be rolling 6:45am from the Disney Hotel Carpark for an easy warm-up ride to the race start (the roundabout/carpark at the bottom of the Beast on the Mui Wo side - yes you need to climb over the Beast to get to the start line!).  You can find all the details here: https://www.strava.com/clubs/21170/group_events/26267

Adding further spice to this year's race is the fact that we have replaced the usually decisive opening Beast Climb with the longer but more gentle Tai O climb (I can hear the super climbers groaning while the rest of us are cheering...) - this will surely change the dynamics of the competition this year as there will be a much larger peleton riding together for much of the race, and a bigger group starting the final ascent up to the finish line at the Buddha - so choose your race strategy wisely this year's race is wide open!.  

After the finish line at the top of the Buddha climb we will regroup at Starbucks and/or 7-11 to refuel, share war stories and discuss return ride options.  So that's all it looks like it's going to be a great day so see you all out there.  The winner and podium placers get huge kudos for themselves and their clubs (and special mention goes to Rupert Griffiths as 2014 defending champion representing Project852) so make sure you are also representing in your club kits!.

Public Transport Options

• For those taking public transport, the 6am MTR from Central (Tung Chung line) will get you to Sunny Bay on time to ride to the Disney hotel carpark to join the main group for the 6:45am start.  
• Alternatively you could opt for a shorter warm up ride and take a later train (don't ask me which one) and get off at Tung Chung instead and make your own way to the start line (I would aim to get to Tung Chung by 7:20am latest if you take this option).  

My best guess is that we will arrive at the start line for roll out around 8am.

In theory the 2015 course could better suit our 2014 champion Rupert Griffiths (who surprised us all with his new found climbing abilities!), so will we see Rupert defend his title and give us our first ever back to back champion?.   Or will Alex Reinert have his revenge from last year and finally lift the crown that has so closely eluded him the last 2 years?.  Or will a new winner emerge from the long list of currently in-form favourites?.  All this and more will be revealed on Saturday you don't want to miss this!.

Kleinwort seizes victory with solo move in Dragons Race to Enlightenment

Michael Kleinwort (B4H) picked his moment perfectly and soloed to victory in the 2015 Dragons Race to Enlightenment.  After withstanding the early attacks, Kleinwort conserved his energy and used a perfectly timed attack of his own to go clear on the  penultimate climb up Tai O road and was able to hold off the remaining chasers on the final climb up to the Big Buddha to solo to victory.



This year’s race started with a neutralized section due to road works on the course, however, Camel Dyrk (Project852) had other ideas and immediately went on the attack!.   Eventually Dyrk (who would later retire from the race) was caught by the peleton, and then it was James Moffat (B4H) who next made a strong move breaking clear on the rolling section out towards Shek Pik reservoir, only to be chased down by his own team mate Rustam Davar (B4H) in a scene reminiscent of Etixx-QuickStep vs Ian Stannard at the recent 2015 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad race!.


The race was together again and it was not until Shek Pik reservoir that the race ignited on the first big climb up South Lantau road.  Clinton Leong (Dragons/Project852) started to lift the tempo up the first climb, only to have an untimely dropped chain derail the momentum.  The peleton sportingly sat up to allow Leong to rejoin the group, however once he regained contact he immediately went off the front and opened up a sizeable gap on the peleton (Leong would later say that it was not an intentional attack but he must have gotten a little carried away with the adrenaline of chasing back to the group!). 



The peleton responded and caught Leong and then it was Steve Drake (SIRS) who seized control of the race moving to the front and setting a viscous tempo up the climb that forced the critical selection, resulting in a group of 4 riders led by Drake  to crest the first big climb and commence the descent to Tai O (Drake, Leong, Moffat and Kleinwort).


Behind, Davar, Anthony Arthur (Project852) and Tina Gilbert (Project852) regrouped to form the main chase group, with Jeffrey Wei (Tritons), Wai Kin, Gareth Hirst (Dragons/Project852), Phil Gann (Dragons) and Mary Ho (Dragons/Project852) a little further back in the main pack.


Out front, Moffat went on the attack on the fast and technical descent towards Tai O and put on a descending master class to open up a large gap, however unexpected roadworks and a herd of cows on the road helped to nullify his advantage, and as they commenced the final climb up Tai O road and to the finish line at the Big Buddha, the front group of Moffat, Leong, Drake and Kleinwort were together again. 



Leong took up the pace setting duties with a hard but steady tempo up the penultimate Tai O climb.  About 2/3rds of the way up Drake and Kleinwort moved to the front, with the latter putting in a hard and sustained attack that seemed to surprise the group and did not draw an immediate response.  The momentary hesitation suddenly resulted in Kleinwort opening up a large gap, and eventually it was Leong who was first to respond and set off after Kleinwort, with Moffat and Drake in close pursuit. 



Starting the final steep climb to the finish line at the Big Buddha, Kleinwort had opened up a seemingly insurmountable lead over Leong, who himself was starting to be reeled in by a hard charging Moffat, and Drake a little further behind.  Half way up the Big Buddha climb Kleinwort started to show signs of weakness (well at least according to Leong!), and Leong suddenly found a second wind and started to close in fast on Kleinwort.  However Kleinwort dug deep and in the end took a comfortable win in a total time of 55:05, 25s ahead of Leong in second place, who himself was able to hold off Moffat a further 52s behind in third place, followed by Drake in fourth.  



Tina Gilbert was our first placed womens rider, finishing a very impressive 6th place overall.


Congratulations to 2015 mens champion Michael Kleinwort (B4H), and our 2015 Womens Champion Tina Gilbert (Project852) on their outstanding victories, and thanks and well done to all that participated in the race.
