Abstract

A positive school climate is known to foster students’ school adjustment. However, little is known about how cultural diversity climates—i.e., school climates promoting equality, inclusion, and cultural pluralism—predict student academic and psychological adjustment. This study addresses this question using representative samples of immigrant and non-immigrant students (N = 451,846) across 34 countries/regions in PISA 2018. The two aspects of cultural diversity climates positively predict academic performance, school belonging, and attitudes toward learning. Critically, the effects did not vary by students’ immigrant status, suggesting that such climates similarly benefit both immigrants and non-immigrants. Country-level predictors are also explored.
