I’m taking a free Stanford online class on machine learning (still
open for registration)
anyone interested in a study group?

Looks curious.  The course description here, https://www.coursera.org/course/ml, mentioned some programing background in needed.  Have you attended any of the lectures yet?  What is your opinion of the level programming background needed to understand the material?

I'm definitely interested. I've played around with a few machine learning concepts in the past. This would be fun to do.

Hey there,

I've been lurking on this list for a bit - I'm originally from
Philly but live in San Francisco and go to a hackerspace
called Noisebridge alot. For the past few years I've been
giving classes off and on about machine learning. If it
helps, we've compiled a long list of machine learning
resources on our wiki:

https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Machine_Learning

You should consider joining the ML mailing list at noisebridge
and seeing if anyone is interested in studying with you somehow!
Last semester a bunch of people were taking the ML and AI
online courses.

Also - the next time I'm in Philly, which will likely be some time
in the next 6 months, if you guys would have me I'd love to stop
in and give an "Intro to Machine Learning" class that I give at
Noisebridge every now and then.

I think we would be very interested to have you come in and talk!

wow i didn't think there would be this much interest (pessimist that i am ;)
regarding david's questions , why don't you register and see for
yourself? ofc you can drop it at any time

i have very little programing exp (3 short scripts)(i'm hoping i can
make up for it with my having finished the stanford intro to AI class)
and have yet to finish the classes

what days work for people?

also looking forward to that talk

thanks

I'd be interested in a study group. (And along those lines, if anyone wants to use the skills learned in the ML class to have a crack at a Kaggle competition or two, let me know.)

I suggest trying to do it during open house. Would make for good conversation for anyone else to overhear.

kbenjamin,

As for programming experience, you should get a handle on
two things - linear algebra, and probably OCTAVE, which is
a mathematical programming environment that the class uses
for examples (if I recall correctly).

For linear algebra, Gilbert Strang's lectures are pretty good:

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-06-linear-algebra-spring-2010/

Here's a link to OCTAVE, which is an open source version of MATLAB:

http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/

The level of programming sophistication you need is, um, not *too*
much, but you should get a handle on basic FOR loops and functions
at the very least, and definitely brush up on linear algebra! You should
know what a vector is, how to take a dot product, and how to multiply
a matrix by a vector. If your calculus is rusty or not there, (re)learn what
a derivative is.

Also - for anyone interested in machine learning, there's a
reasonably awesome and free e-book available here:

http://www-stat.stanford.edu/~tibs/ElemStatLearn/

I think they use R alot for their examples, which is another
open source data analysis package with a pretty strong ML
and stats community behind it:

Ben PJ MSCHACTHTER & Sean:

This book is excellent if you know a little PYTHON  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1617290181/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
I would be very interested in any presentations on Machine Learning particularly Claassfication based on Sesor Information To Be Held at The Hive

ok we'll start tomorrow @7
,everyone who wants to do the class(or even just view the lectures at
home) should register https://class.coursera.org/ml/
(i don't know the deadline but it probably would be better to stay on
the safe side.)

also in case some people are unaware this is part of a much larger
selection of free
classes by top collages

i got the sense that people had better things to do at the OH
would people be more likely to participate if it were on another day?
and if so which?
i can do sunday and monday (also tuesday and thursday starting at 8)

Yeah, I find that open house is generally too busy for any kind of event.

You should definitely try a different day.

I couldn't make it on Wednesday, but I'd definitely be interested in
boning up on my ML. My interests are mostly in Musical Information
Retrieval, and I'm currently getting started on a Python framework for
doing feature extraction and analysis/classification, so this would
dovetail nicely.

If it's not during an open house would the meeting still be open to non-members?

Yeah, any time we do a special event, workshop, or whatever, it is always open to non-members.
