_We Won the Knight Arts Challenge!_
If you haven't heard of it, the [2]Knight Arts Challenge is an opportunity
for any individual or organization to submit their best idea for the arts
that benefits Philadelphia. The challenge opened last year, when 36
finalists were awarded $2.7 million. This year there were 35 finalists out
of over 1200 applicants, and we were among them!

In a nutshell, _our idea will support artists who want to begin
incorporating electronics and technology in their work_. We will draw on our
network of expert techie artist-teachers to develop and teach classes for a
class of apprentice artists. The apprentices will be supported with stipends
and given workspace at The Hacktory, and will lead hands-on activities for
after-school students to build their teaching skills. The apprentices will
show new work they've created in a final exhibition.

As our long-time ally and expert interactive artist Wil Lindsay
said, “True
innovation comes from a synthesis of ideas, and there is no better catalyst
than that found through the sharing of knowledge promoted through the
Hacktory's activities and events. This new funding source allows the reach
of that catalyst to move far beyond a small room with a few “geeksâ€
hovering
over laptops, soldering irons and blinking LEDs. It means these shared ideas
can _reach a larger audience and new creators_, and spread through the
Philadelphia region where it can really make a difference.â€

The Knight Foundation believes the future of art is in the digital realm.
“The intersection of art and technology provides creative mind with a
wealth
of opportunity. We look forward to seeing how these artists can create
projects that engage Philadelphia audiences,†said Dennis Scholl, vice
president for arts at Knight Foundation.

There's a catch though,_ the grant of $40,000 will only be awarded if we
raise an equal amount in the next year_. We plan to raise the funds through
a mix of fundraising events, kickstarter, selling kits and posters, and
asking for individual contributions.
We now have over 500 members on this mailing list. _If each of you
contributed $3-$5, it would be a great way to kick off our fundraising_ (of
course if you can give more, we would really appreciate it).

We are so thrilled for this recognition and opportunity, and the ability to
_move from a volunteer-managed organization to a sustainable enterprise_.
We're looking forward to using this support to also help us create a regular
class schedule for the next year, as well as lots of fun geeky social
events, tours, and collaborative group projects for anyone to participate
on. Thanks for your support!
