I’m looking for a 12’ lightweight, sit-inside kayak with decent paddling characteristics that can accommodate an average large size adult like me (6’1”, 180 lbs, size 12 shoes). I’m thinking an Eddyline Skylark might work… but I’ve never paddled one. Does anyone have one or paddled it?

Cheers,
Mac Carter

I'm wondering why you want this boat. It seems awfully wide and short. I think it would be slow and not very responsive to weight shifting and edging.
It wouldn't be capable to keep up when paddling with other sea kayakers.
I guess it is light weight :)
What are you trying to get that your Sterling boat doesn't have?

Good question, Marianne! I know it may sound like I’m defecting. Not so.

Penny and I have been looking for 2 smaller, lighter rec kayaks for our charter boat business. We bought a barely used Eddyline RIo for her birthday last week (11’9”, 35 lbs). It’s designed for smaller framed people. It is MUCH easier to get on/off our boat compared to her 59 lb 16’ Sterling Reflection. It a fairly large cockpit, cuts the water smoothly, has hard chines and maneuvers surprisingly well. It seems perfect for the business.

We have the Rio and my 41 lb Delta 12’10” on board now for a 7-day cruise. We are anchored in Prevost Hbr now.  And, I was able to try out a Skylark yesterday (a nearby sailboat from Anacortes has 2 Skylarks). It weighs the same as my Delta 12/10 but is nearly a foot shorter. The Delta is relatively light, but still pretty big to handle getting it on/off the boat. I have not found a better option to my Delta than the Skylark.

So, we’re starting to look for a used Skylark. Long answer to a good question.

If anyone has an idea, I’m open...

Cheers,
Mac

Oh, that makes sense. I think for product niche and wt/durability, Eddyline has a good product.  The cost factor is much more appropriate for the boat rental clients too.
Probably perfect for exploring from the “Mother Ship “ as well 😊
I’m surprised that the Reflection weighs so much! My Ice Cap weighs about 35 lbs.

We had clearly specified to Sterling that her Reflection must weigh on more than 45 lbs. or less (like my 42lb Illusion)  He did not do it... really bugged us. We accepted it because she needed the boat for a trip that next week. Shouldn’t have... Been an issue ever since.

FYI my Reflection weighs about 50 lbs. and wish it were 35-40.

That’s getting into the weight range of the “Brit” boats 😅
