I live on Benslow Lane, a steep hill, and we have had a lot of snow and now ice, but no salt. Where in Hitchin are roads treated, and surely hilly areas should be high on the list because of the extra danger.

How about footpaths? I live off the Gosmore Road and had to inch my way down the footpath alongside Hitchin Hill on Saturday to go shopping - wish I'd had crampons and ropes. Police are telling us not to go by car if at all possible - but there's no safe alternative for other modes. A lot of the pavements in Hitchin itself were lethal too.

Benslow Lane and Benslow Rise are just the same. Certainly no safer on foot on those roads.
