Engaging communities in budget decisions to build power |
People are more likely to experience better health when they’re engaged in decisions that impact their future. Supporting residents engage in public budgeting decisions can increase government transparency, civic participation, and equitable distribution of public funds. Called participatory budgeting, it is often implemented in municipal government but can be applied to public funding at any level, including in schools, agencies and organizations. Anita Dos Santos, advocacy manager at Participatory Budgeting, will join us to share strategies that encourage participatory budgeting in communities. The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department’s business development manager, Benjii Bittle, will also join us to provide examples of communities and organizations using this approach to strengthen the connection to health, share power and strengthen democracy. |
