Subject: MWS - Meeting to Discuss Stormwater Issues Related to Infill Development

All,

Please share with your listservs!  This coming Thursday, July 25rd, at 6 p.m. at the McCabe Golf Course Clubhouse, I will be hosting a community meeting to discuss the ever-growing concern about stormwater issues that arise for property owners who are adjacent to infill development projects.

As many of you know from first hand experience in your neighborhoods, the rise in new infill development for single family home construction has resulted in significant increases in the amount of impervious surface area due to the practice of subdividing existing lots to create multiple lots for new, large homes. This type of development alters the drainage characteristics on a parcel of land, often creating stormwater runoff issues onto adjacent and downstream properties. Because the existing stormwater regulations provide exemption from grading permit requirements for properties disturbing less than 10,000 square feet of land, often these new infill properties are not required to follow the stormwater regulations that would be in effect for a new, traditional subdivision.

Over the next several weeks, several of my colleagues on the Council, along with Metro Water Services will be scheduling a series of neighborhood meetings to gather information from residents of that are currently experiencing this type of development. During the course of the next several months, we would like to gain understanding of the issues that raise concerns for homeowners in these neighborhoods, while also seeking input from the development community. The ultimate objective is to seek solutions that will ensure that stormwater runoff will not overwhelm stormwater infrastructure, impact water quality in our streams, or impact adjacent property.

I hope that you will be able to join us this Thursday to begin this discussion.  However, if you are not able to attend this meeting, please be aware that CM Allen will be hosting another similar meeting tomorrow night at  6 p.m. at Martin Professional Development Center (Turner Hall D), 2400 Fairfax Avenue, and CM Evans will be hosting one on August 13th at 6 p.m. at Hillwood High School.

If you have questions, or if you need more information about this discussion, please do not hesitate to contact me as well.

Thank you,

Jason Holleman
