Wanted to know if anyone else uses alias names for their trauma patients who presents in the ED, and how you handle the merging of records.

1.       Do you use an Alias for your Trauma patients to expedite patient care?

2.       If patient information is not known and you use an Alias, how are you able to merge if there is an active account in the system?

3.       How often are you merging?

4.       Do you perform Cross Facility Merges?

Thanks,

I’ll get some more info on our process from our EMPI Lead and respond of what the specific procedure is in the ER for Trauma patients.  I know some of it, but I don’t know when and how the merge occurs.  McKesson does have a custom that some Cerner Clinical Clients use.  You can inactivate an account.  You can then perform a merge or a visit transfer in STAR.  The downside if the visit has to be discharged prior to the inactivation.  You don’t have to wait for the suspense period though.

Thank you,

Wanted to know if anyone else uses alias names for their trauma patients who presents in the ED, and how you handle the merging of records.

1.       Do you use an Alias for your Trauma patients to expedite patient care?  We use ECC,UNK XXXX  - where XXXX is the Middle Name and comes from a pool of sequential numbers

2.       If patient information is not known and you use an Alias, how are you able to merge if there is an active account in the system?  We have a custom in STAR where you can force a visit to become inactive.  That then allows a patient merge to occur.  I’m not sure if they wait until the patient is gone before they merge in Star.  I do know there is some flexibility in Cerner with merging of encounters and patients.

3.       How often are you merging?  Sometimes while the patient is in house and after discharge

4.       Do you perform Cross Facility Merges?  We use Passport and perform cross facility merges in Passport.  Our STAR System is not multi-facility.  Our two hospitals have two instances of STAR, but are integrated with Passport.

Thanks,

Brian,

Thanks for your prompt response.  It would be great to learn more on the “inactivating of accounts” in STAR.
