[Stephens Observatory]

You may already have heard, the vintage “Cooley Telescope” that graced Stephens Memorial Observatory since 1939, and Hiram College since 1901, has been sold and removed. Its new owner will, over the next several years, refurbish the big refractor hoping to return it to public service somewhere.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Laura Van Wormer and Hiram College for allowing me the privilege of operating the observatory on their behalf. Over the years we have played host to many hundreds of visitors who were impressed by both the sheer size of the telescope and the quality of the views it delivered. The best nights were simply magical.
