I'm looking to buy the game since it's on a pretty good sale. But I want to play with 2 or 3 of my friends. Does anyone know if the online coop for the story mode allows 4 or only 2? Or does it depend on the mission? I know there are raid like missions for 4 players and massive boss battles but we really want to play the story together. Or at least most of it.
Our prayers have been answered! For years, the One Piece: Pirate Warriors series has been a fun series of games to play. One of the things that I felt was limiting it was the online play. It was only 2 players online or 2 players local couch co-op. Well not anymore! Bandai Namco has announced that One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 will have 4 players online co-op! The newest trailer confirms it.
Online co-op mode will also allow players to team-up against giant bosses and will feature exclusive online missions that can only be experienced in co-op mode; encouraging players to form their very own pirate crew. With a large character pool to choose from, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 will provide fun with a group of friends.
Jump online with One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 and you'll be able to play with up to three other players, Bandai Namco has confirmed. In a first for the series, there'll be exclusive online missions that you can tackle alongside fellow One Piece enthusiasts. According to the press release, said missions present a real challenge, so teamwork is probably preferable.
So I opened a session to get the exclusive skill to the online mode, tried to play with an user from the UK (I'm from Spain) and we couldn't join a room. First he invited me, yet I always got the failed to connect message, then I created a room to invite him, and same on his side, while in the room after I send the invite I see the message "player has avandoned the room" yet he never got inside, probably this is displayed after he gets the error. We've tried with quick match, and we can see each other rooms yet when we try to enter we get the same result as with the invites, failed to connect after loading for a few seconds.
The game is not region locked, as long as both players are playing the Pirate Warriors or Kaizoku Musou you'll be fine. Also, i had the same problem when i tried to boost with a person who wanted the online skill too, so i don't know if it's the online servers or it's connection issues between players.
So I had the opportunity to play with other players and I can confirm two things. First, the online works totally fine, and second, is not region locked, as the first person I played with -after the errors with the first user- was from Spain like me, but the second which I just finished a match with is from Brazil.

Bandai Namco detailed the online multiplayer modes included in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, and how it includes coop and multiplayer pvp battles. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 has four different modes you can play online with your friends. The first one is "Giant Boss Battle" mode, where four players need to cooperate and defeat a giant enemy. Giant characters like Kaido will be used as the bosses you'll need to defeat. The second online mode is "Joint Bounty Battles", where four allied players need to survive and keep fighting to raise their own bounty. The third mode is "Timed Defense Battle", where four allied players need to defend a territory during a time limit. The last mode is "Territory Battle", where three teams of four players fight each other in a territory battle. The team with the biggest territory wins.
