Citizens and experts were divided over the construction of the proposed second Sun Temple at a seminar on the issue
organized here on Saturday.
While some were of the opinion that there should not be a replica of the Sun Temple, others felt that the government and sculptors should take the initiative to set up another beautiful monument, as big and marvellous as the Sun Temple inKonark to "recreate the past glory". The discussion was organized by Kalinga Heritage Preservation Trust(KHPT), in association with INTACH, Odisha chapter. KHPT chairman Anil Dey said, "A year ago, KHPT decided to create a new Sun temple with Konark as its ideal. After some research we have developed a set of drawings and a project report on the temple. The project will require 50 acres of land, a tentative financial outlay of Rs 172 crore. It will be a global Sun temple and a showpiece of Odia art, culture and heritage." "Konark was a superhuman work and an archaeological marvel, which should not be copied because a copy cannot be a masterpiece. Recreating Konark temple would be difficult as certain technologies used in the temple were much ahead of the time and very sophisticated. We must create something, which would demonstrate the artistic skills of Odisha's sculptors. And, the temple should be at least of the size of Konark Sun Temple. In the new temple we should include something new that is not there in the earlier temple," Gopal Mitra, a retired engineer of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said, while addressing the meet. Raising a question over the feasibility of the project, noted sculptor Sudarshan Sahu said, "We can certainly create a Sun temple of the size and magnitude of Konark, but there are a lot of challenges to realize the dream. We may face problems of lack of stones, adequate number of skilled artists or workforce to build the temple. It requires a lot of research and deliberations before a project like this can take shape." Other experts said the existing sun temple, which was built in the 13th century, may last another 100 years, or more. They also expressed unhappiness over its restoration process, as the carved stones are being replaced by plain stones by the ASI and a time will come when the whole temple will have only plain stones, instead of the exquisite stone carvings. President of INTACH, Odisha chapter, A B Tripathy said, "All experts should give their suggestions in writing for the construction of the Sun temple. Besides, INTACH has urged the ASI not to use plain stones to replace the carved ones." Former bureaucrat Sanjib Hota said, "Konark should be recreated again for the generations to come with a similar grandeur and glory. We may use modern technology, but there should not be any compromise in the architectural style." |
