MELVILLE
VILLAGE FOLK ‘n ACOUSTIC
MUSIC
PICNIC – kZN South
Coast
Following on
from our 2 previous amazing acoustic music events, here is another wonderful laid-back South Coast community
day…
THIS EVENT MARKS AN HISTORIC MILESTONE
in the hidden history of local rock ‘n roll – it was 50 years ago, exactly, that
DAVID MARKS joined THE BOYS BAND in Witbank – and the leader of the band at the
time PETER FARNHAM, will be a guest at the gig on Saturday – see the info below
& photos. And 40 years since the first HINDS BROTHERS (Kevin & Colin)
made an appearance in 1971 at 3rd Ear Music Free Peoples Concert at
Wits & the National Folk Festival in Rivonia.
TIFFANY /
GINGER SEIPP
ROGER
LUCEY –
after ‘years on the run’, as it were – from himself & the security police
pre-1994 - this revolting rocker has just completed his Master Degree at
Duke University in South Carolina, USA. Since his 2 highly acclaimed and
heavily ‘banned documentary’ albums (The Road is Much Longer /
3rd Ear Music 1979 & Half Alive / Warner Bros Music 1982)
Roger has been on the road for almost 30 odd years; as a news cameraman and
troubadour. Despite his recent sojourn into academia, he still writes &
performs & films, kicking up an ‘acoustic’ music storm wherever he appears.
And for this event Roger will be accompanied by percussion legend and
internationally renowned indigenous
music
promoter of note, DAN CHIORBOLI.
THE
HINDS BROTHERS –
Fast becoming legends in their own time; wonderful singer-songwriters, and
accomplished acoustic guitarists, who have just signed to SONY RECORDS, they are
born & bred South Coasters. These young Hinds Boys are following in the
family’s musical footsteps of their father, KEVIN HINDS (bound to make an
appearance with his boys on the 26th November) and who formed the
original HINDS BROTHERS in the 60’s – Father Kevin & Uncle Colin. Now here’s
synchronic bit - 3rd Ear Music used to book The Hinds Brothers
40 years ago & he’s doing the same again; and if that weren’t coincidence
enough, David Marks’ 3rd Ear Music, publishes a few
1970’s
Kevin Hinds songs… (who recorded for EMI records in 1970) one of which
appeared in another ‘famous’ HINDS BROTHER’s album – Craig
Hinds
of WATERSHED.
Screaming Doc Hansen and Niedia / Goldie & Silver - The Screaming Doc played bass for the legendary FLASH HARRY in the seventies & many bands since. He’s now moved to Durban and runs the Northway Showcase – a monthly folk ‘n acoustic gathering at The German Club in Westville; he is the SILVER of the group. GOLDIE Niedia has a voice that could soothe tigers and once she gets used to her new stage name of Goldie they’ll be on their way. Niedia was a regular act at the DFC (Durban Folk club) and sang professionally for several years at South Coast venues. Goldie & Silver are polishing Niedia’s original songs to augment a repertoire that already includes standards from the golden decades, but perhaps not the ones you hear in constant heavy rotation at the tribute shows and on AOR radio. Plus a bit of fun.

ENOCH CELE – Not much is known about Enoch. He’s a South Coast find from The Rock Bottom Restaurant in Pumula; a Maskandi musician and new-comer to public performance, Enoch - in the typical ‘Zulu Walking’ Minstrel and Troubadour style - creates melodies and moods with words as the situation of the time requires or demands. More will be revealed as he spreads his words & music around the South Coast.
DAVE ANDREWS - Performing solo, and in duos from 1984 until 1990, in pubs, clubs and shows, Dave - a wonderful guitar player and technician – mastered all the rock anthems from the early years; when there was still great demand from his discerning audiences. Dave began with a band – classically called The “Electric Fungus” which debuted at the Hillcrest Library Hall on the 7th May 1977; a repertoire that included a myriad of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Alice Cooper songs he pounded his way around the rock circuit for almost 2 decades. Dave has subsequently “opened shop” with THE aXe WORKSHOP in 2010, repairing, setting-up, and modifying guitars to the highest standard of professionalism. His workshop is currently frequented by most local musos, professional or otherwise, and his “personal touch” ensures he has many happy musician customers.
SEAN ‘Slim’
ROSS – Doesn’t say much… about himself or anything else for that matter –
his songs do the talking. A wonderful voiced singer songwriter and a late entrant into the beautiful world of music, Sean
has been writing songs these past five years; mostly cowboy rock ballads over
thoughtfully poetic lyrics.
DAVID MARKS – a relic
from the 60’s who STILL writes and performs his songs (in a manner of speaking)
David DOES NOT ENTERTAIN… he informs and shares stuff: accompanied with his
acoustic guitar, he raps his lyrics up in a few chords and delivers as per the
occasion. 2011 is a special year… in that it was 50 years ago, almost to the
month, when David joined his first ‘rock’ band at school
in
Witbank (he had been in cadet bands & toying with a Bellini Guitar for a few
years before that) but what makes this occasion special, is that the leader
of the BOYS BAND from 1961 / 1964, PETER FARNHAM, will be at the Acoustic Folk
Music Picnic on the 26th.
