This series of novels is based on the life of Lord Shiva, considered to be one of the three supreme deities in Hinduism. While the author Amish takes liberties with known mythology, he produces a pacy, well written text that grabs the reader by his eyeballs. So while the conservative reader would be more inclined to prefer the writings of Ramesh Menon, any reader who enjoys a good yarn will reach out for this high voltage series by Amish Tripathi.
Amish’s usp is that he has presented Shiva as a normal human being - an incredibly brave, extremely strong, resolute and skilful chieftain of a tribe of warlike people from the North. He is fighting for the survival of his small tribe, which looks to him to lead them to safety away from the daily battles that have worn out his tribe as well as their opponents. Circumstances lead Shiva to travel south, towards the unbelievably advanced Meluhan civilisation, (which we refer to as the IVC, the Indus Valley Civilisation) in 1900 BCE.
In the novel, the Meluhans, despite their advanced civilisation and extremely well organised and disciplined public life, are a nation in decline. Incessant warfare with their southern neighbours is bleeding them. They rely on an ancient prophecy, where a young man from the North, with a blue throat, (Nilakanth) shall come and rescue them and lead them to glory. They see the young Shiva as their saviour, a point of view which is not shared by Shiva himself!
